Kardashians 2011: The Annoying Year in Review (omg!)

Kardashians 2011: The Annoying Year in Review

It seems that bashing the Kardashians came into vogue this past year, with criticism of the E! reality stars flowing freely from all walks of life.

During an appearance onstage at the MTV Movie Awards, squeaky-clean Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon was widely believed to be calling out Kim Kardashian -- as well as Paris Hilton and others -- for utilizing sex tapes and reality shows to catapult their celebrity status and careers. "I get it, girls, that it's cool to be a bad girl," Witherspoon told the crowd. "But it is possible to make it in Hollywood without doing a reality show. When I came up in this business, if you made a sex tape, you were embarrassed and you hid it under your bed."

FOX News shout-show host Bill O'Reilly blasted the Kardashians as an example of "all that's wrong with America" and for having "no talent," but still having the nerve to just "sit around and whine."

Criticism even emanated from the country's most famous residence, the White House, when First Lady Michelle Obama revealed that President Barack Obama didn't like it when his daughters were interested in watching the family's flagship drama fest, Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

Eventually, James Bond also jumped into the snowballing Kardashian fray. 007 star Daniel Craig made headlines after he was quoted in GQ magazine as saying: "Look at the Kardashians, they're worth millions. I don't think they were that badly off [financially] to begin with, but now look at them. You see that and you think, 'What, you mean all I have to do is behave like a f--king idiot on television and then you'll pay me millions?'"

So are the Kardashians getting a bad rap? Is the mounting criticism warranted despite the family's contributions to American (and international) pop culture? I for one believe this annoying locomotive can't be stopped fast enough. Indeed, it seems a crash is needed to stop this celebrity train wreck!

In 2011, the Kardashians pulled out all the stops in their aggressive campaign to grow the "family brand." And while some have suggested this reality dynasty is manipulating the media to further their fame and fortune, the truth is that most media is simply eating up every single Kardashian morsel and then spewing it out for their own ratings and profit.

Here are my top 10 reasons the Kardashians were annoying in 2011. But of course it doesn't stop here -- join in the conversation and share your opinion!

10 -?Product Expansion - Move over Gucci and Armani! The Kardashians recently expanded their retail operations with just what the world needs, a "celebrity lifestyle boutique" -- called Kardashian Khaos (how Kute) -- at The Mirage in Las Vegas.

9?- Birthday Girl - Kendall Jenner drives away from her Sweet Sixteen birthday bash with what every 16-year-old wants and needs -- a new Range Rover!

8?- Birthday Boy - The birthday madness continued recently at a party for Mason, the two-year-old son of Kourtney Kardashian and her partner Scott Disick. The extravagant party for about 75 guests -- planned by Kim's wedding planner Sharon Sacks -- reportedly was an over-the-top Wild West-themed bash including haystacks, ponies, goats and pigs. Among Mason's luxurious gifts: a mini grand piano!

7?- Rob Kardashian goes on Dancing with the Stars - As if all the other public Kardashian happenings were not enough, Rob pushed his family visibility even further by appearing on this top-rated show -- at his mother's urging he said -- to strut his stuff with pro partner Cheryl Burke. He eventually danced his way into the final two.

6?- What's in a Name - In an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kris Jenner considers changing her last name back to Kardashian to be more consistent with that "family brand." Several of Kris' children understandably disagreed, arguing that the switch would be a rude slap in the face to her current husband of 20 years, Bruce Jenner.

5?- Reality Scripted - It seems there's no longer a need to pretend that anything on any of the Kardashian "reality shows" is spontaneous.

4?- Proposal - In May, Kim announced to the world that her NBA basketball star boyfriend Kris Humphries had proposed in a romantic moment at her Beverly Hills home. Kris was waiting in her bedroom on bended knee with four words written in red rose petals: "WILL YOU MARRY ME?" Kim said she was caught off guard and "in shock" over the proposal, which included a huge 20.5 carat Lorraine Schwartz engagement ring.

3 - Wedding Profits - While it was reported that the Kardashians made up to $20 million from the lavish ceremony, Kris Kardashian denied the claim and said Kim actually owed money for the over-the-top festivities. Kris did admit money was made from exclusive photos of the event, with People magazine paying a reported $2.5 million for the pics.

2 - Wedding - Referred to as the "Wedding of the Century" and "America's Royal Wedding," the world became subjected to hours of media saturation leading up to this star-studded TV extravaganza.

1?- Kim's Divorce - After just 72 days and apparently without any real attempts to work on the relationship or get counseling, Kim Kardashian decided to file for divorce from Humphries.

Android increases its U.S. market share, according to latest ComScore numbers

Android Central

Analytics firm ComScore just released a new batch of numbers, showing Android extending its lead over, well, everybody in the United States for September through November of 2011.

Out of the 91.4 million smartphone subscribers in the United States, ComScore says 46.9 percent -- about 43 million give or take -- have Android smartphones. That's up 3.1 percentage points from the June through August. Apple, meanwhile, saw slower growth, at 28.7 percent (up from 27.3 percent for the previous period).

Those were only platforms to see growth -- RIM was down 3.1 percentage points to 16.6 percent, microsft fell a half-percentage point to 5.2 percent, and Symbian down three-tenths of a percentage point to 1.5 percent. WebOS was a no-show.

GadgetTrak launches CameraTrace: Photo thieves beware (Digital Trends)

camertracerYou may remember hearing about photographer John Heller?s ordeal recovering his $9,000 worth of camera gear this summer. The thieves unwittingly uploaded photos taken with the stolen equipment, including a Nikon D3, to sites popular photo sharing platforms?which is just what GadgetTrak wanted.

The site was then testing a beta application that would scan photo-sharing sites like Flickr and 500px for images uploaded from potentially stolen equipment. The meta-data on these images reveals camera serial numbers, so owners missing their gear can easily identify if it?s theirs or not.

It was a dream come true for Heller, and now GadgetTrak is releasing the technology to consumers. Called CameraTrace, the service basically creates an identity for your camera so that in the cause it?s taken it can easily search the worldwide Web for any image taken with the device. Users pay a one-time $10 fee per camera, which comes with a lost-and-found tag that good Samaritans can use to trace back to owners who have merely misplaced their cameras.

In the case your device has been stolen, however, you will use the system to file a police report. GadgetTrak will even take up your case and speak with local enforcement if you choose. Basically you?ll have a helping hand through the painstaking process of getting your equipment back.

According to GadgetTrak, the CPUsage platform behind CameraTrace is able to thoroughly asses where your device has gone via uploaded images. It?s also allegedly able to identify more than 300 different ?high-end camera models? from various brand names.

Serious photographers will get an added benefit from using CameraTrace. The site also protects your copyrighted photos via its image monitoring service, which scans social sites to see if anyone out there is using your work without permissions?and pointing you in their direction.

Compared to how much photographers are willing to shell out on their gear, $10 is chump change. And given the popularity of the photo-sharing sites, this could be a very effective form of insurance.?

Former Atletico hero Diego Simeone is their new coach

Diego Simeone is the new coach of the Spanish Primera Liga side Atletico Madrid, the club announced.

Simeone replaces Gregorio Manzano, who was sacked Thursday following his side's defeat to Albacete in the Spanish Copa del Rey and a poor start to the season that has left the club just four points above the relegation zone.

Simeone becomes the 49th coach at Atletico since Miguel Angel's father, Jesus Gil, took control of the club in 1987.

The 41-year-old was a hero of the Atletico Madrid side that won a league and cup double in the 1995-96 season before leaving to play in Italy, where he played for Inter Milan and Lazio.

He returned for another year at Atletico late in his career in 2003, but again left the club to end his playing career.

Moving into coaching after hanging up his boots, Simeone worked with Racing Club de Santander, before working with River Plate, Estudiantes, San Lorenzo and with Italian side Catania, and then finally returning to Racing, who he abandoned at the end of last week.

Big rally helps Pats clinch first-round bye

Brady runs for 2 TDs, passes for another as NE rebounds from 17-0 deficit to beat Miami

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, left, celebrates his touchdown with teammate Wes Welker during the fourth quarter.

updated 4:33 p.m. ET Dec. 24, 2011

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Tom Brady ran for two touchdowns and threw for another and the New England Patriots rallied to clinch a playoff bye with a 27-24 win over the Miami Dolphins on Saturday.

The Patriots trailed 17-0 at halftime then scored on their first five possessions in the second half. The Dolphins helped when Matt Moore lost a fumble at his 38-yard line then threw an interception that Devin McCourty picked off at the Patriots 2.

New England (12-3) won its seventh straight game. After the Houston Texans lost to the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night, the Patriots needed a win or a tie to lock up one of the AFC's top two spots.

Miami (5-10) lost for the third time in eight games after opening at 0-7 and is 1-1 under Todd Bowles, who took over when Tony Sparano was fired.

Issues Remain In Greek Debt Talks

Talks between Greece and its private creditors on cutting the country's massive debt load have made some progress, but disagreements remain on key parts of the deal, a person close to the negotiations said Thursday. Big banks and investment firms have been asked to forgive Greece some 50 percent of its debts so that the country can concentrate on getting its economy back in shape and eventually raise money on financial markets again. Athens has been kept afloat by a ?110 billion ($144 billion) bailout from the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund since May 2010 and has been promised an extra ?130 billion in aid if investors agree to share part of the burden. The idea is that by forgiving Greece part of its debt, private creditors avoid the much bigger losses they would face in a tumultuous default. While the eurozone and bank representatives reached a tentative deal on a debt restructuring in late October - which would see Greece debt cut by some ?100 billion - discussions on the details of the agreement have dragged on. The plan was to agree on the terms of a bond swap by the end of the year, so that private investors could exchange their old bonds for ones with a lower value in January or February, ahead of a ?14.4 billion repayment deadline Athens faces in March. In recent days, the Greek government and private investors agreed on some structural aspects of the package, but are still divided on central financial questions, which will determine the level of losses private creditors have to accept, said the person, who has been briefed in the talks. The person was speaking on condition of anonymity because talks are still ongoing. Investors won concessions from the government negotiators, who agreed to provide legal certainty that private creditors won't face more losses if Athens runs into trouble again in the future. For instance, the swapped bonds will be treated in the same way as loans from the eurozone in case of a future default by Greece. On top of that, the new bonds will be issued under U.K. rather than Greek law, giving investors extra security that the parliament in Athens won't be able to change their terms in the years to come. But the person said that there was still no deal on when Greece will have to repay the new bonds and at what interest rate. A high interest rate could add billions of euros to Greece's financial burden. Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said Tuesday that he expected to reach an agreement with the private sector by early January, but the person close to the negotiations declined to commit to a deadline. He said informal discussions would continue in the coming days. All participants in the negotiations - Greece, the IMF and the eurozone on the one side and the bank representatives on the other - are under enormous pressure to reach a deal that can convince enough bondholders to participate. The IMF said in a report earlier this month that "near-universal participation" in the bond swap was necessary for Greece's debt to become sustainable again. How difficult that may be became clear earlier this month, when hedge fund Vega Asset Management resigned from the committee that has been leading the negotiations for the private investors. In a letter dated Dec. 7, Vega threatened legal action against Greece if it was forced to take steep losses as part of the restructuring. The person close to the talks said that letter was friendly in tone, and that some holdouts were to be expected, since different bond holders have different interests at stake. For example, a hedge fund, which may have bought its bonds when they were already trading at a steep discount, may be more willing to bet on getting bigger payments through a law suit than a bank or insurance fund more focused on cutting its risks. Separately, Greece's Finance Ministry said it exceeded its deficit-cutting targets in the first eleven months of the year, despite a revenue shortfall. A ministry statement on state budget execution Thursday showed the deficit was ?20.6 billion ($26.7 billion), a little bit lower than the ?21.1 billion target. The figures exclude certain categories of spending. ____ Nicholas Paphitis in Athens contributed.

S&P: Banks downgrade threat remains despite ECB funds (Reuters)

FRANKFURT (Reuters) ? The half a trillion euros the European Central Bank pumped into the financial system buys hard-hit banks valuable time but will not in itself protect them from threatened rating downgrades, one of Standard and Poor's top executives said.

The ratings firm put almost the entire euro zone and some of its biggest banks, including Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, Societe Generale and UniCredit, on a downgrade warning this month.

In a telephone interview with Reuters on Friday, S&P's Managing Director of its Financial Institutions division, Scott Bugie, said this week's unprecedented injection of three-year loans by the ECB was a positive step.

But it would not solve the banks' key problem of carrying too much debt.

"The move in itself will not lead to any improvement in (banks') credit ratings," Bugie said.

"The operation is a big deal. It's half a trillion euros of three-year money at an ultra-low rate. It is not solving the fundamental issues though... It's kicking the can a long way down the road rather than just a little bit but in the end it is still kicking the big old can down the road."

While the ECB remains heavily reluctant to ramp up its purchases of troubled euro zone states' debt - a move many economists feel may be the only way to get to grips with the region's crisis - it has underscored its readiness to provide limitless funding to ensure banks do not go under.

Bugie said this week's move showed the ECB was committed to solving the crisis, and although it pushed the potentially problematic interlinkage between debt-laden banks and sovereigns to new levels, it provided some much needed breathing space.

"The ECB action doesn't change the fundamental picture but it does buy valuable time and it will be taken into account when we do our analysis to resolve the creditwatch actions.

"It deepens the symbiosis between the sovereigns and the banks, the passing of the risk back and forth. It also adds to the big question of how the governments and the central banks will exit."

S&P is not expected to release its eagerly awaited verdict until January on debt ratings for the 15 euro zone countries it placed on review, two independent European government sources told Reuters on Friday.

With the rating agency also currently having over half of Europe's banks on a negative outlook and many of those on what it calls its 'watch negative', meaning a near-term downgrade is likely, Bugie added that 2012 was set to be a turbulent year.

"We are looking for a rough ride in 2012, the first quarter will be very tough."

"For Italy it will really be a test (due to big sovereign issuance due)," he said.

Darwin's Golf Courses Of The Isles Coming To TV

I think it's safe to say Golf Channel could right many the wrongs perpetrated by the Big Break Series by picking up Landmark Media Productions' "The Golf Courses of the British Isles" based on and using the words from Bernard Darwin's classic book.

The description for this 13-part series is followed by a YouTube posted preview:

Using his powerful, often poetic, prose as a narrative guide, "The Golf Courses of the British Isles" will be a video travelogue through the breathtaking courses of Great Britain and Ireland. Stunningly shot and immaculately produced, our series will showcase these spectacular venues in a way that has never been done. In Darwin's writings, the golf courses become living, breathing characters. It's time to tell their stories.

'Survivor' producer's mom: 'He is innocent'

By Randee Dawn

Bruce Beresford-Redman may not be able to share his thoughts with the public, but the former "Survivor" producer, now accused of murdering his wife Monica, is getting his side heard via his mother, Juanita Beresford-Redman.

Juanita joined TODAY's Ann Curry to talk about her son, who has been held in a federal detention center since Nov. 2010, and while there has been prevented from speaking to the press.

How are they all doing? "It?s living in a nightmare but we?re healthy and the children are a joy, and they keep you going," said Juanita.

Bruce, his wife and their two young children were vacationing in a Cancun, Mexico resort in the spring of 2010 when she went missing. She turned up three days later strangled in a sewer, and despite being asked by officials to remain in Mexico, Bruce returned to the United States. Now the U.S. and Mexico are wrangling over extraditing him back to Mexico to face trial -- something Juanita says Bruce wants to avoid.

"Many of the states in Mexico presume a person is guilty until proved innocent," she said. "It is an entirely different justice system and the evidence against Bruce is all circumstantial. There is no forensic evidence, there is no physical evidence, the crime scene was badly degraded."

Juanita provided Curry with explanations for what is perceived to be key concerns in Bruce's behavior once his wife went missing. First, he didn't report her gone until the following day at 6 p.m., which Juanita says didn't seem like a long time. As for the repeated use of the couple's hotel key the day after she went missing, Juanita said "he was looking for her and then he would come back to check on the children.... You tend to do that when someone's missing and you're nervous."

Juanita admitted Bruce did have problems in his marriage, but said Monica told her they "wanted to stay together as long as they could because of the children." She added, "With everything else aside, there's no way Bruce would have taken their mother away from her children."

The children remain a second center of focus; they're being raised by Juanita and David Beresford-Redman, while Monica's family are fighting to obtain custody of the 7- and 4-year-old children.?

And one key reason Bruce is fighting extradition has little to do with the Mexican justice system, said Juanita -- right now, he can see his children once a week for an hour, and if he is extradited he won't even have that. "It seems to me as long as he can be close to them, he should be," she said.

"I know he is innocent, he is a good man, and of course I trust him completely," said his mother.

Tech IPOs back to earth after Zynga fizzles

Mark Lennihan / AP

The corporate logo for Zynga is shown on an electronic billboard at the Nasdaq MarketSite.

By Martha C. White

For technology companies, this year has been a return to the glory days of "rocket shot" IPOs, but it looks like the comeback tour is just about over.

Online game maker Zynga fell flat in its stock debut last week, falling from its offering price of $10 a share to just a bit over $9 by the close of trading Monday. (Click here for the latest price.)

Sam Hamadeh, CEO of financial data provider PrivCo, said Zynga shares fell in part because the company sold a higher percentage of its shares than other recent tech IPOs. What's more, buyers are concerned about the company's reliance on Facebook and a plateauing of its once-meteoric growth.?

But the failure of the stock to achieve even a first-day spike is indicative of what analysts say is a changing sentiment toward tech companies.?"I think certainly you've seen investors becoming more skeptical," Hamadeh said.

After LinkedIn's May IPO that saw the stock price quickly double, market observers inevitably began making comparisons with the gogo tech bubble years of the late 1990s. Tech companies were hotter than they had been for years.

Pandora's IPO was also a hit, debuting at $16 after targeting the $10 to $12 range. But neither company's shares held onto those highs, and other buzzed-about tech IPOs in recent weeks also failed to live up to their initial hype. Angie's List and Groupon both struggled to maintain early momentum.?Jim Krapfel, equity analyst at Morningstar, said investors viewed these as cautionary tales when evaluating Zynga.?

"With Groupon and Angie's List, both sold off 30, 40 percent in the weeks subsequent to their offerings," he said. "It's just a lot of uncertainty with these names." The promise of huge future revenues is tempered by largely unproven business models, Krapfel said.

When market sentiment turned negative in August, this let more air out of the IPO balloon. "Until that improves meaningfully, that kind of trend will likely continue into 2012," Krapfel said.?

More down-to-earth public offerings for tech companies could even affect?Facebook, whose own IPO is expected in 2012. Krapfel says the social networking giant is in a better position than its peers due to its size and clout, but it wouldn't be immune to widespread market malaise created by a deepening European debt?crisis or the U.S. economy slipping back into recession. Hamadeh said Facebook would benefit if it viewed as a caveat?Zynga's fixation on raising $1 billion regardless of the strain that placed on its share price.?

Another reason Zynga failed to pop, according to Hamadeh, was an uncharacteristic lack of interest from retail investors. This lack of enthusiasm could be contagious and drag down future offerings.

"For new IPOs coming online, I think that would certainly give investors pause," he said.?

Amateur buyers usually gravitate toward names they recognize and companies with a lot of buzz. This time, retail investors stayed away. Maybe they were too busy playing Farmville.?

A list of six stocks investors should avoid next year, with Dave Rovelli, Canaccord Genuity, among them; Netflix, Research in Motion, and Ericsson.

Hugh Hefner Talks Spicing Up Lindsay Lohan's Playboy Reshoot (omg!)

Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson and Playboy's Hugh Hefner, December 15, 2011 -- Access Hollywood

Lindsay Lohan's Playboy issue hit newsstands today and Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson caught up with Hugh Hefner to get the details on the actress' Marilyn Monroe-inspired shoot. Hef says the tribute was a last-minute choice after he was disappointed with what the photographer first shot with Lindsay.

"I saw the results of the first day of shooting and it was not what I was looking for," Hef told Shaun in an interview at the Playboy Mansion on Thursday. "[Lindsay] hadn't bared it all in the first one and she looked like she had just come out of rehab... She looked like she just got up in the morning.

PLAY IT NOW: Why Is Hugh Hefner ?Concerned? For Ex-Fiance Crystal Harris?

"I wanted her to do something that would be truly unforgettable," he added.

Inside the pages of Playboy, Lilo's poses are nearly identical to those of Marilyn's iconic 1953 spread in the men's mag. While Lindsay was on board for the reshoot, her handlers -- at first -- were not, because this time she would be fully nude.

"They wanted a little more clothing and I said, 'You know, this is going to be what it's going to be, because we're doing a tribute here to the original nudes,'" Hef explained.

"Marilyn Monroe's comment after the original shoot was, when they asked what she was wearing, [she] said, 'All I had on was the radio.' All Lindsay Lohan had on during this was the radio!"

When asked if the actress arrived to the photo shoot on time, the Playboy magnate wasn't able to provide an answer, but said if she was truly channeling Marilyn, punctuality would not be one of her strongest points.

"I don't know the answer to that, [but] if she's doing a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, I assume that means she probably didn't show up on time because Marilyn didn't show up on time," he told Shaun.

"Marilyn was late also?" Shaun asked.

"Oh yes, with regularity," Hef answered.

Despite the unauthorized, premature release of Lindsay's pictorial, Hef still has high hopes for the issue.

"I think you can count on it," he told Shaun, when asked if he believes Lindsay's issue will be a bestseller. "The publicity surrounding it and the anticipation is remarkable."

Gingrich says rivals' criticism taking a toll

(AP) ? Newt Gingrich tried to quiet unrelenting campaign criticism that he acknowledged had taken a toll as Mitt Romney stepped up insider attacks Saturday in hopes of regaining front-runner status with the first presidential vote little more than two weeks away.

Gingrich, the former House speaker enjoying a late surge in the polls, pledged to correct what he said were his rivals' inaccurate claims about him. Romney, the ex-Massachusetts governor looking for a rebound, portrayed Gingrich as a well-heeled lobbyist since his service in Congress and predicted that conservative voters will reject Gingrich as they learn more about his lengthy Washington record.

"I'm going to let the lawyers decide what is and what is not lobbying, but when it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, typically it's a duck," Romney said.

With the Iowa caucuses Jan. 3 up for grabs, most candidates are redoubling their efforts heading into the holidays, when voters generally tune out the race.

Gingrich is their prime target. Last week alone, anti-Gingrich ads from a Romney ally outspent Gingrich by an 8-to-1 margin on television.

Gingrich cited "the extraordinary negativity of the campaign" during a call from Washington with Iowa supporters. He said he was inclined to hold teleconferences every few days so people can discuss ideas and his campaign can "encourage them to raise any of these things that you get in the mail that are junk and dishonest."

"I'll be glad to personally answer, so you're hearing it from my very own lips," he said in the forum. "We don't have our advertising versus their advertising, but you get to ask me directly."

Romney campaigned in early-voting South Carolina, where tea party activists have given Gingrich a strong lead in polls. Romney told reporters that many voters now are just beginning to pay attention to the race and will turn on Gingrich after they learn about his time in Washington and his role with mortgage company Freddie Mac, a quasi-government agency.

Gingrich's consulting firm collected $1.6 million from the company. Gingrich insists he did not lobby for them and only provided advice.

"I think as tea partyers concentrate on that, for instance, they'll say, 'Wow, this really isn't the guy that would represent our views,'" Romney said after a town hall meeting with South Carolina Rep. Tim Scott. "Many tea party folks, I believe, are going to find me to be the ideal candidate."

Gingrich said the attacks on his record have been brutal, but he insisted they are exaggerated.

"I just want to set the record straight," Gingrich told his Iowa backers. "We were paid annually for six years, so the numbers you see are six years of work. Most of that money went to pay overhead ? for staff, for other things. It didn't go directly to me. It went to the company that provided consulting advice."

It's a distinction without a difference, his rivals have said. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann continued to criticize his tenure as a consultant and Texas Rep. Ron Paul continued an ad accusing him of "serial hypocrisy" for taking Freddie Mac's checks.

During a Friday appearance on Jay Leno's late-night television show, Paul also turned on Bachmann.

"She doesn't like Muslim. She hates them," said Paul, who routinely clashes with his rivals over foreign policy. "She wants to go get them."

Bachmann told reporters in Estherville that was not true.

"I don't hate Muslims. I love the American people," she said. "As president of the United States, my goal will be to keep America safe, free and sovereign."

Texas Gov. Rick Perry rumbled through rural Iowa on a bus tour. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum stuck to a plan that has won him the honor of spending the most time in the state, yet has not yet translated into support in polls.

Iowa's largest newspaper, The Des Moines Register, announced its endorsement of Romney on its website Saturday evening. It was as much an endorsement of Romney as it was an indictment of his competitors.

"While other candidates have pandered to extremes with attacks on the courts and sermons on Christian values, Romney has pointedly refrained from reckless rhetoric and moralizing," the newspaper wrote.

The paper does not have a track record of predicting winners in Iowa. In 2008, the paper backed Republican Sen. John McCain and Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Four years earlier, it backed Sen. John Edwards' unsuccessful bid and in 2000 editors backed McCain and Democratic Sen. Bill Bradley. All came up short.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who early on decided against competing in Iowa, was campaigning in New Hampshire. Huntsman, who also served as President Barack Obama's ambassador to China, has kept his focus on New Hampshire, where independent voters are the largest bloc and can vote in either party's primary.

As the Iowa vote neared, Gingrich's decision to take the weekend off from campaigning raised eyebrows given his rivals' busy schedules. Gingrich called the decision "pacing."

Gingrich has prided himself on a nontraditional campaign, but his advantages in the polls could shift if the only exposure to Gingrich comes through rivals' negative ads.

Gingrich's campaign manager noted the onslaught in a fundraising pitch to donors.

"With Newt's opponents spending $9 million on attack ads in Iowa, we need to quickly ramp up our messaging," Michael Krull said Saturday.

Anti-Gingrich ads, courtesy of Romney allies, dominate in Iowa. The Restore Our Future political action committee on Friday spent an additional $1 million on airtime, and broadcast almost $790,000 in commercials against Gingrich last week alone. Gingrich, by comparison, spent roughly 100,000 on broadcast and cable ads.

That looked to continue into the final week before the Christmas holiday.

Romney, who has kept Iowa at arm's length after investing heavily here four years ago only to come up short. His advisers note they have kept in touch with supporters of his 2008 campaign that came in second place in Iowa.

FACT CHECK: GOP candidates get Obama policy wrong (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential candidates have claimed that the Obama administration is cleansing government files of references to radical Islam, an assertion so juicy that politicians keep repeating it ? even though it's a wild exaggeration.

The latest to run with the story is former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who told a crowd in Des Moines that the president "actually ordered all references to Islam and Muslim sanitized out of our national security documents."

And over the weekend, Newt Gingrich told a veterans' forum in Des Moines that the administration has "issued instructions, for example, that in developing training papers on terrorism that no mention should be made of radical Islam."

Rep. Michele Bachmann paved the way on Oct. 28, when she told 75 Republican faithful in Iowa that "Obama is allowing terror suspect groups to write the FBI's terror training manual."

So where is this coming from? Last September, the online publication Wired.com broke a story that an FBI analyst had given a lecture to bureau trainees that was critical of Islam. The publication followed up, disclosing that the same analyst had given a similar lecture to an FBI-sponsored event in New York City. The FBI immediately ordered a comprehensive review of all the materials it uses to train its agents.

It would be hard to overstate the importance the FBI attaches to assistance from the Muslim community in the bureau's terrorism investigations in the United States ? a point that FBI Director Robert Mueller drove home in an appearance Wednesday at the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"We have met with various representatives of the Muslim community" in the aftermath of the inappropriate FBI training to convey just how seriously the bureau takes the matter, said Mueller.

In an effort to ensure that all of its training materials are appropriate, Mueller said, the bureau assembled a five-member panel of experts on Islam ? two people from inside the FBI and three outside scholars ? from Yale, Princeton and Johns Hopkins University.

The review found a very small percentage of material that was either inappropriate or inaccurate or both, and the bureau immediately got rid of it, said a bureau official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to be able to discuss the internal handling of the issue.

"I believe our relationship with the Muslim community is very good," said Mueller. The director told Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., that "we are addressing" the problem and that "it's an anomaly."

A few snippets of the former FBI analyst's assertions reflect the kind of information the bureau regards as inappropriate.

The materials for the FBI analyst's instructional presentation said that mainstream American Muslims are likely to be terrorist sympathizers, that the Prophet Mohammed was a cult leader and that the Islamic practice of giving charity is no more than a funding mechanism for combat.

A video of the New York City lecture included a reference to "an Islamic motivation" for violent acts of terrorism. The analyst no longer teaches training classes.

Air Force Blames Pilot in Suspicious Stealth-Jet Crash [Airplanes]

When an F-22 Raptor malfunctioned in mid-flight, leading to a crash that killed its pilot, the Air Force went into damage-control mode. Gen. Norton Schwartz, the chief of staff, insisted there was no way that the oxygen generator on his prized stealth jet - a system widely suspected of being dangerously flawed - caused the crash. And even now that an internal inquiry seems to contradict Schwartz, the Air Force is still blaming Capt. Jeffrey Haney for the crash that cost Haney his life. More »

Distro Issue 18 explores the life of Ron Wayne, Apple's lost founder

Some have pegged Ron Wayne as unlucky; not only did he lose big by backing out of one of the most successful companies in consumer electronics, but a set of documents he once sold for a reported $500 recently demanded $1.6 million at auction. Earlier this month, Brian Heater spent two days in the Nevada desert following Apple's third founder, a man known best for his proximity to two guys named Steve and notoriously unfortunate timing. In this issue of Distro, we'll get a glimpse inside Ron's world -- a place occupied by slot machines, antique firearms and collectible coins -- and discover what he really thinks about his onetime business partners. Also in this issue, we'll double your pleasure with a pair of LG smartphone reviews: the Nitro HD and DoublePlay. Dana Wollman will rip through Jawbone's troubled fitness device, the Up, and take Lenovo's IdeaPad U400 for a spin. Ross Rubin will serve up his opinion on "WebOS' Open Sores" and we'll explore the gadgets we can't let go of in IRL. So get to downloading!
