ROME (AP) - Napoli rejoined Juventus at the top of Serie A with a 1-0 win at 10-man Sampdoria on Sunday, as the southern club seeks its first Italian title since Diego Maradona first led it to glory.

Edinson Cavani converted a penalty for Napoli in the 67th minute for his league-best sixth goal of the season.

Daniele Guastaldello was given his second yellow card for tripping Marek Hamsik at the edge of the area to set up the penalty.

Replays showed that the penalty may have occurred just outside the area.

"It was on the line, and the line is part of the penalty area," said Napoli manager Walter Mazzarri, who was sent off in the first half for arguing calls.

Maradona led Napoli to its only two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990.

At the very least, Napoli is aiming for a top-three finish to get back into the Champions League, having reached the knockout stage last season before being eliminated by eventual champion Chelsea.

Last season, Napoli finished fifth in Serie A.

Juventus beat Roma and old rival Zdenek Zeman 4-1 on Saturday, while struggling AC Milan gave up a lead in a 1-1 draw at Parma.

---

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Valladolid thrashed visiting Rayo Vallecano 6-1 with two goals each by Oscar Gonzalez and Manucho on Sunday, breaking a two-game losing streak in the Spanish league.

"My team played intelligently. It knew how to interpret the game," said Valladolid coach Miroslav Djukic, who watched the match from the stands while serving a suspension for complaining about the referee.

"We avoided making mistakes and were very efficient in attack, combining well and entering from the flanks."

Also, Granada beat Celta Vigo 2-1 for its first win this season.

---

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) - Darren Bent came off the bench to earn Aston Villa a point with a late goal in the 1-1 tie with midlands rival West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Sunday.

The England striker scored on a left-foot shot from close range in the 80th minute, denying West Brom a victory that would have lifted the team to third place.

Shane Long put the visitors ahead in the 51st, guiding home a low finish after Ron Vlaar's attempted clearance flew straight at him.

Villa has won just one of its first six games under new manager Paul Lambert and stayed in 15th place in the 20-team standings. West Brom is sixth, its best top-flight start since the 1978-79 season.

---

AMSTERDAM (AP) - U.S. striker Jozy Altidore raised his Dutch league-leading goal total to eight with a first-half score for AZ Alkmaar in the team's 3-3 tie with RKC Waalwijk on Sunday.

Altidore also made the pass for midfielder Adam Maher to tie the score for AZ in the 86th minute to preserve the team's unbeaten home record, which now stands at 26 matches.

Dries Mertens and substitute Juergen Locadia both scored hat tricks Sunday as PSV Eindhoven beat VVV-Venlo 6-0 to move to third.

---

BERLIN (AP) - Alexander Meier scored twice for Eintracht Frankfurt to beat Freiburg 2-1 on Sunday, extending the promoted team's unbeaten start to the Bundesliga.

Max Kruse gave visiting Freiburg a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute, scoring with an angled shot from a rebound after Sebastian Freis' initial effort was saved.

Meier tied the score in the 68th.

Oczipka delivered the corner for Meier to score again five minutes later.

---

PARIS (AP) - French leader Marseille's perfect start to the season came to an emphatic end Sunday, when it lost 4-1 to Valenciennes with goalkeeper Steve Mandanda making a huge blunder.

Gael Danic and Anthony Le Tallec put Valenciennes 2-0 up after 35 minutes, and Mandada then rolled the ball out straight to Foued Kadir for the Algeria midfielder to make it 3-0.

Le Tallec scored his second of the game midway through the second half.

Marseille won its opening six matches.

Author Ken Laybolt Showcases a Rich Arsenal of Military Stories

Engaging new book compiles short tales that take readers to various parts of the world

ONTARIO, Canada (PRWEB) September 29, 2012

An article posted on wellandtribute.ca, Entertainment Local News titled ?The beauty of storytelling? shares one man?s passion for writing. Playwright and actor Colin Bruce Anthes was quoted by saying ?Writing has become my favourite because I can always keep doing it. I can write under any conditions.? In line with this, author Ken Laybolt reveals his work, Helmets On an eclectic compilation of military stories that will stir readers from beginning to end. This riveting book showcases a wide-range of experiences encountered by various soldiers through different times, ages and locations.

Storytelling is indeed an inevitable part of humanity. Used mainly for social interaction, tales, whether real or fictional, create a sense of empathy and camaraderie among people. They are there to generate feelings that float in between the extremes of love and hate, admiration and condemnation, security and separation. Stories ambiguously remind mankind about both its human frailty and the idealistic and noble virtues inevitably found in the lessons.

Helmets On shares life-like depictions of the lives of soldiers, whether they are veterans or rouges, who served their countries and lived to tell the whole world about their fascinating experiences. A literary beacon of inspiration, this book takes one from Yugoslavia to Kosovo, from Bosnia to Croatia, and all the way into Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Nanosciences: All systems go at the biofactory

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? In order to assemble novel biomolecular machines, individual protein molecules must be installed at their site of operation with nanometer precision. LMU researchers have now found a way to do just that. Green light on protein assembly!

The finely honed tip of the atomic force microscope (AFM) allows one to pick up single biomolecules and deposit them elsewhere with nanometer accuracy. The technique is referred to as Single-Molecule Cut & Paste (SMC&P), and was developed by the research group led by LMU physicist Professor Hermann Gaub. In its initial form, it was only applicable to DNA molecules. However, the molecular machines responsible for many of the biochemical processes in cells consist of proteins, and the controlled assembly of such devices is one of the major goals of nanotechnology. A practical method for doing so would not only provide novel insights into the workings of living cells, but would also furnish a way to develop, construct and utilize designer nanomachines.

In a major step towards this goal, the LMU team has modified the method to allow them to take proteins from a storage site and place them at defined locations within a construction area with nanometer precision. "In liquid medium at room temperature, the "weather conditions" at the nanoscale are comparable to those in a hurricane," says Mathias Strackharn, first author of the new study. Hence, the molecules being manipulated must be firmly attached to the tip of the AFM and held securely in place in the construction area.

Traffic signals prove the efficiency

The forces that tether the proteins during transport and assembly must also be weak enough not to cause damage, and must be tightly controlled. To achieve these two goals, the researchers used a combination of antibodies, DNA-binding "zinc-finger" proteins, and DNA anchors. "We demonstrated the method's feasibility by bringing hundreds of fluorescent GFP molecules together to form a little green man, like the traffic-light figure that signals to pedestrians to cross the road, but only some micrometers high," Strackharn explains.

With this technique, functional aspects of complex protein machines -- such as how combinations of different enzymes interact, and how close together they must be to perform coupled reactions -- can be tested directly. A further goal is to develop artificial multimolecular assemblies modeled on natural "cellulosomes," which could be used to convert plant biomass into biofuels. Strackharn points out the implications: "If we can efficiently build mimics of these 'enzymatic assembly lines' by bringing individual proteins together, we could perhaps make a significant contribution to the exploitation of sustainable energy sources." Alt-week 9.29.12: 3D pictures of the moon, 4D clocks and laser-controlled worms

Alt-week peels back the covers on some of the more curious sci-tech stories from the last seven days.

Altweek 92912 3D pictures of the moon, 4D clocks and lasercontrolled worms

Dimensions, they're like buses. You wait for ages, and then three come along at once. And then another one right after that. While that might be about where the analogy ends, this week sees us off to the moon, where we then leap from the third, right into the fourth. Once there, we'll learn how we could eventually be controlled by lasers, before getting up close and personal with a 300 million-year old bug. Sound like some sort of psychedelic dream? Better than that, this is alt-week.

The first ever estimate of the economic burden of cancer in Europe shows that it exceeds 124 billion euros

Vienna, Austria, 28 September 2012 New studies that reveal for the first time the real economic and human costs of caring for cancer patients in Europe will be presented during the ESMO 2012 Congress of the European Society for Medical Oncology in Vienna.

"Here we have two studies of enormous importance," noted Prof Peter Boyle, President of the International Prevention Research Institute in Lyon, France, Member of the ESMO Faculty group on Cancer Prevention, who was not involved in the studies. "It is essential to have knowledge of the total costs of cancer and Dr Luengo-Fernandez and colleagues have performed a great service in preparing such a detailed report".

"The remarkable study of Dr Gilloteau and colleagues provides unique information on the impact of cancer on care-givers. This again is key information and is almost unique. These studies provide a background on which logical funding decisions can be made," Prof Boyle concluded.

Total cost 124 billion Euros each year... highest costs in Germany

Cancers cost the European Union 124 billion Euros each year, according to the first ever estimate of the economic burden of malignancies in the region. Lung cancer is responsible for the highest overall burden, the new study shows.

Dr Ramon Luengo-Fernandez from the University of Oxford, UK, and colleagues included direct health costs such as primary care, hospital care and medications, as well as the cost of informal care and losses in productivity in their calculations. Their data came from a variety of sources including the WHO, the OECD and national ministries of health.

"Cancer poses a considerable economic burden not only to healthcare systems but to other areas of the economy, including productivity losses through early mortality and time-off-work, and relatives who have to forego work/leisure to care for cancer patients," Dr Luengo-Fernandes said.

"Healthcare systems will have a good idea, I expect, of the healthcare costs of providing cancer care to their patients. However, the productivity losses and informal care costs associated with cancer will be less well understood and their magnitude less appreciated."

The researchers break their figures down by country, and by cancer. The lowest per-capita healthcare cost for cancer was 32 Euros per year in Lithuania, while the highest was in Germany where an average of 165 Euros was spent on healthcare for every person in the population.

"The countries with the highest per-capita costs in terms of cancer healthcare tend to be Northern and Central European countries. Those with the lowest per-capita costs tend to be member states who joined the EU in 2004 and have lower national income levels," Dr Luengo-Fernandez said.

Breast cancer had the highest healthcare costs, at 6 billion Euros each year, accounting for 13% of the total cancer healthcare costs in the EU. However, the highest total economic burden was attributable to lung cancer, a total of 19 billion Euros, of which 10 billion due to premature mortality.

"One of the purposes of studies such as this one is to enable comparisons to be made between the burden of different diseases, aiding decision makers to prioritize scarce research funds," Dr Luengo-Fernandez said.

"In order to be in a better position to inform policy decisions there is a great need for improved information on epidemiology, healthcare resource use and unit costs across the EU."

Commenting on the report, Prof Peter Boyle said: "It is essential that the economic impact of cancer on a community is known, understood and placed in its perspective. The greatest single economic cost was 6 billion Euros for breast cancer. This should be placed in the perspective that the economic cost of pneumonia in the EU is 10 billion Euros each year. The cost of cancer is not just the cost of drugs and hospital stays and this has been taken into account by Dr Luengo-Fernandez."

Caregivers are hidden patients themselves

Looking after a person with cancer is associated with a variety of statistically significant impairments compared with non-caregivers.

Dr Isabelle Gilloteau from Bristol-Myers Squibb and colleagues obtained data from the 2010 and 2011 EU National Health and Wellness Surveys, self-administered online surveys of 105,581 adults in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

They found that relative to non-caregivers, people who cared for cancer patients reported that they experienced worse physical (47.6 vs. 48.9) and mental health (43.7 vs. 46.9), were more likely to be absent from work (8.1 vs. 4.8), were more impaired in their activities (28.7 vs. 21.8), and had twice as many hospitalizations during the past 6 months (0.22 vs 0.11). The reports indicate that they were 50% more likely to be diagnosed with depression and had twice the odds of anxiety and insomnia, as well as higher odds of suffering from migraines (OR = 1.663), headaches (OR = 1.369), or gastrointestinal problems (OR = 1.626), compared with non-caregivers.

"The levels of burden seen in the current study for mental quality of life and absenteeism impairments are similar to those observed elsewhere among adults with hepatitis C virus in the EU, or adults with osteoarthritis pain in the US," Dr Gilloteau said. "They are also similar to mental quality of life impairments seen among adults with rheumatoid arthritis in the EU."

"The vital role played by unpaid caregivers in supporting cancer patients is well recognized, but the health burden and economic impact on these caregivers is poorly understood," Dr Gilloteau said.

"Caregivers of cancer patients reported statistically significantly poorer overall health status, physical and emotional health status, more healthcare resources use, and their work productivity and daily activity were also statistically significantly impaired. They were also at greater odds of being diagnosed with comorbidities. Importantly, this study specifically quantifies the extent of the burden attributable to each of the components mentioned above, and specifically examines comorbidities likely to have been affected by the caregiving experience. Estimating the financial impact of caregiving in cancer is essential as a future research step, especially given that the current findings indicate that this cost will be high."

The researchers call for greater recognition of the unmet caregiver needs. "This study underscores the importance of recognizing caregiver burden, not just because of the direct implications for the well-being and quality of care of the patient with cancer, but also due to the extra burden it brings to society overall," Dr Gilloteau said. "Because caregiving is a vital part of cancer patient management and providing this care incurs substantial burden for the caregiver, it is crucial to consider what can be done to minimize this burden, especially in the current context of containment, combined with an aging population and increasing incidence of cancer."

Avast! Free Antivirus 7.0.1466 / 7.0.1468 Beta | software programs

Here are some key features of "Avast! Free Antivirus":

Core and detection:
? Antivirus and anti-spyware engine
? State of the art scanning engine provides reliable protection against viruses, spyware and other forms of malicious software.

Real time anti-rootkit protection:
? Unique "on access" technology checks all kernel-mode drivers that the operating system is loading for signs of rootkit behavior. This enables even unknown rootkits to be detected and stopped before they can do any damage.

avast! Community IQ:
? Most samples we process come from sensors deployed throughout the avast! community in the Behavior shield and anti-rootkit modules. This is a unique source of data made possible only thanks to our huge user base. Most of the collected samples are analysed by a number of automated processes and only a small fraction of the samples need to be processed manually by our virus analysts.

Code emulator:
? When a suspicious executable is encountered (during both on-demand and on-access scanning), avast! is able to emulate the program?s code in an isolated environment. The code emulator is used for two purposes. First, it is used for generic unpacking. Secondly, it is used in the heuristics engine. Technically, this is done using dynamic translation, a method much faster than traditional emulation techniques.

Heuristics engine:
? avast! features a new heuristics engine designed to proactively detect malware undetectable with normal definitions. The heuristics engine is able to cover both binary (executable) and script malware.

Potentially unwanted programs detection:
? avast! detects potentially unwanted programs, such as remote admin tools and commercial key loggers. Custom rules can be set for dealing with these types of programs.

Scanning:
? Boot-time scanner
? Allows you to scan your computer for infections before the operating system has started and before a virus can be activated (32-bit operating systems only).

Command-line scanner:
? Enables you to run a scan directly from the command line.

Wake-up for scan:
? Microsoft Windows is woken from sleep or hibernation mode, performs a scheduled scan, then returns back to sleep mode.

Scheduled scanning:
? Allows users to define the scan time and files to be scanned.

avast! Intelligent Scanner:
? Can reduce the number of required file scans by up to 80% through a white list of proven safe applications. Files identified as safe are not rescanned unless they change.

Shields:
??Behavior Shield
? Monitors activity on your computer using a number of sensors (file system, registry and network based) and reports/blocks any suspicious behavior.

??Behavioral Honeypots
? avast! sensors identify and monitor suspicious file activity on selected computers, automatically submitting files to the Virus Lab for additional analysis.

??File System Shield
? Real-time scanning of opened/executed files.

??Mail Shield
? Scans all incoming/outgoing e-mails for malware. For MS Outlook, a special plug-in is used. Other email clients are protected by a generic POP3/IMAP4/SMTP proxy. New in version 5, the proxy also supports scanning of SSL communication (gmail.com, sympatico.ca, ?.)

??Web Shield
? Scans all visited web pages and checks all files, pages and java scripts downloaded from the internet. Thanks to the Intelligent Stream Scan feature, the Web shield doesn't slow down your web browsing.

??P2P Shield
? Checks files downloaded using P2P programs. - ABC, Ares, Azureus, BearShare, Bit Torrent, BitComet, BitLord, BitPump, CZDC++, Direct Connect, eDonkey, eMule, iDC++, iMesh, Kazaa, Kceasy, LimeWire, Morpheus, Opera's DC++, Overnet, Qtrax, Shareaza, SoulSeek, StrongDC++, uTorrent, Vuze, WinMX, Winny2, Zultrax.

Facebook Messenger for BlackBerry reaches App World, sates compulsive chatters

If you own a BlackBerry, it might not have been immediately apparent that Facebook Messenger has been an option since October; unlike with Android or iOS, you had to track down the download on Facebook's website. We don't know why it's been kept out of a more accessible channel, but that ends today with Facebook's chat-focused app arriving on BlackBerry App World like most any other title. There don't appear to be any new tricks included with the expanded availability, although we'd say that the wider exposure is enough of a highlight for an audience that just needs to get by until BlackBerry 10. Those who don't use BBM for all their instant messaging can find what they need at the source link.

What You Should Know Before Starting An Online Business

There are a number of people who have started businesses online. While there are still an enormous amount of companies that have storefronts and physical locations, many merchandisers are using online only systems because they have such low overhead and can often provide a better return on investment than regular businesses. However, while there are enormous advantages to starting an online business, it is important that people understand how different online businesses are compared to businesses with physical locations and the issues associated with them.

Understanding How To Run A Website

One of the most important parts of running a successful Internet business is knowing how to run an eCommerce website. Since Internet only businesses do not have physical storefronts, a business?s website is its storefront. This means that business websites need to be incredibly well designed, easy to navigate and protect data that is transmitted through them.

Websites that are unattractive or difficult to use are likely to quickly drive away visitors and prevent many sales from being made. Additionally, online businesses need to put measures in place to ensure that credit card and other financial transactions are secure and that information is not accessible to hackers.

Online Advertising

It is also important for people looking to develop an online business to understand how different Internet advertising is from classical advertising. While Internet advertising is generally much less expensive and far more targeted than radio, TV or billboard marketing, it requires far more research and a larger time investment. The most common forms of Internet advertising are search engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per-click (PPC) advertising.

Both of these require understanding how search engines work and creating landing pages that produce a high sales or conversion rate. These types of advertising are also directly tied into website design and creation, another reason that understanding how to run a web page is so critical to Internet business success.

Internet Communication

Another area where running a business on the Internet is vastly different from running a regular business is in the area of communication. While it is considered acceptable for a manager or business owner to get in touch with a customer within 24 to 48 hours in the regular business world, people operate at a much faster pace on the Internet. Many people expect responses from online businesses within a few hours. Additionally, it is not uncommon for Internet consumers to expect a variety of round-the-clock communications options, such as chat, forums, social media and telephone operators.

Drawback to Online Businesses

As mentioned, there are a number of advantages to starting an online business. However, it is important to note that the Internet business world is extremely competitive. Developing a solid online reputation takes time, and like any business, there is no guarantee of success. Further, there is a very sharp learning curve associated with running an Internet business, and the technology is always improving and changing, requiring business owners to do constant research to stay competitive. For people to succeed in the Internet business world, they need realistic expectations and an understanding of the online business environment.

Pedal-powered espresso cart a hit for java junkies

4 hrs.

An award-winning pedal-powered espresso cart is generating buzz as a fine way for eco-conscious java junkies to get their daily fix.

Amos Reid Field and Lasse Oiva, graduates of the Royal College of Art in London, describe the Velopresso as a ?celebratory fusion of human power, sensory pleasures and technology -- old tech with hi-tech, bicycles and coffee, their engineering and aesthetics.?

Pedals on the modified tricycle push the cart down the road and grind beans, meaning no whirring motors to startle caffeine-deprived heads.?

Water is currently heated up with a tiny gas canister, though the team is exploring the use of turning old coffee grounds into ethanol to power operations, according to Inhabit.?

When this eco-friendly machine will be brewing your double-tall, extra-hot latte is unknown, but given winning recognition for design in the 2012 Deutsche Bank for Creative Expression and second place in the 2012 Pininfarina Design Contest, it seems as if this espresso cart has momentum.

self-driving-carFor people who live and work around Silicon Valley, sightings of self-driving cars have become pretty common -- especially on the roads and highways near the Mountain View, California headquarters of Google, which has been championing the technology. And it looks like such sightings could become more common throughout the state of California in the months to come.Today, the office of California Governor Jerry Brown announced that he has signed into law a bill "that allows driverless cars to be operated on public roads for testing purposes."

News Coffee: Coffee Drinkers Rejoice! Caffeine and Exercise Found ...

Good news coffee drinkers, A recent study at Rutgers University found that exercise and caffeine, used together, doubled the levels of the tumor-suppressing protein "phospho-p53. Exercise alone boosted this protein by 18% and drinking two cups off coffee increased this protein by 27%.

So drinking coffee and exercising may prevent cancer in sun-damaged skin cells by increasing the level of a tumor-blocking protein in the body.

"We think this points out a need for more studies to see if the combination will protect people against sunlight-induced skin cancer," said the study's senior researcher, Allan Conney, the director of the Laboratory for Cancer Research at Rutgers University.

This research was conducted as a result of a previous study on Green Tea. It was found that only the caffeinated version of Green Tea helped get rid of DNA damaged skin cells. The decaffeinated Green Tea had no effect to repair damaged skin cells.

Here is What I Recommend as The Best Strategy to Use Caffeine and Exercise Together

1) Don't eat anything 4 hours before working out

2) 30 minutes before training drink two cups of coffee or 3 cups of Green Tea

3) Make sure and perform intense cardio after lifting to take advantage of caffeine's fat burning potential

It looks like mother nature wants us to drink coffee! So Starbucks is a health food store...I knew it! Don't go crazy here...coffee and green tea is great as long as you don't load it down with sugar and cream. Stick with black coffee. My drink of choice is a "Double Tall Iced Americano". This is basically a fancy way of making iced coffee with espresso shots, water and ice. You can make a similar drink with brewed coffee, but it isn't quite the same.

Not only will caffeine reduce your risk of skin cancer, it will give you energy on a low calorie diet to burn body fat like crazy!

Life Sciences and IT Investing: More Like Nuts and Gum than ...

PEHub is reporting that limited partners are putting more resources into life sciences all of a sudden. The article is low on details but says several funds in the $200 million to $400 million size are being raised right now. I know most of our audience doesn?t care much about life sciences ? although you could argue anyone susceptible to death, disease, or aging (read: All of us, even you, Larry Ellison) should.

But the mini-trend is interesting in what it says about IT investing: absolutely nothing.

Typically there?s a resurgence in life sciences whenever IT investments slump. But I don?t think that?s the case this time. For one thing, there?s no evidence we?re in a slump ? there are a bevy of conflicting data points on the health of the startup ecosystem. If anything, the most negative naysayers are concerned that we aren?t yet seeing the psychological ripple effects of disappointing IPOs make their way to the private company world.

That?s not to say that a correction won?t be coming for all those angel deals that can?t get a series A, the series A companies that haven?t gotten enough traction for a follow on round. And an overall crush of valuations when members of the 2011 $1 billion valuation club set out to raise another round. But said carnage isn?t here yet.

If you want evidence of disappointment in the consumer Web, look to the resurgence in enterprise deals instead. In the intervening years between the March 2000 NASDAQ crash and whatever this thing is that we?re in now, it has become clear that investing in life sciences and tech are utterly different animals ? more so today than ever.?Decades from now when we look back on the venture capital business, I think we?ll be surprised that life sciences and tech investments were ever done out of the same funds, through the same partnerships, and under the same roofs.

Two things have changed the businesses forever: The Internet and the playbook of big pharma.

Back in the days when Silicon Valley actually made, you know, Silicon, companies couldn?t go from idea to IPO at light speed. Tech IPOs, when they occurred, were small and companies grew the longer they were in the market. It was a totally different game. It?s similar to those opening weekend box office records that get gaudier and gaudier as the film business has changed, moving away from long runs based on reviews and word-of-mouth to huge opening weekend mega-plex pushes on as many screens as possible before the reviews come out. Far more screens and higher ticket prices are why there are such bigger opening box office weekends today ? not because the movies are any better. The film industry essentially hacked its way around reviews.

Similarly, the Internet hacked its way around the normal laws of building a tech company. It?s dramatically faster and cheaper to get a product into market, and the delivery is mostly direct to consumers, not shelves of stores or networks of distributors. But there?s a downside: It?s feast or famine. The days of the small IPO are gone, as most Internet companies go very, very big or sell quickly. When it comes to tech, venture capital has become even more of a home run business.

But it?s not just that the speed and size of the consumer Web has become more distinct from the long-time horizons and uncertainty of drug discovery. Life sciences, too, has changed in the last decade, pulling hard in the other direction. Amgen and Genentech were supposed to be the future for this field, the first two ? of many ? massive publicly traded drug discovery companies. But instead, the industry en masse opted to do the research equivalent of the acqui-hire: Rather than take on the risk of expensive clinical trials and uncertainty when it comes to the FDA and insurance coverage, biotech companies do licensing deals with big pharma early and often.

You can understand why. Consider Tysabri, a multiple sclerosis wonder drug that was expected to become a blockbuster until sales were suddenly suspended in 2005 with warning of new potential side effects. It took more than a year to come back on the market and has only recently won clearance to modify its label, which investors hope could double sales over the next year. This was a seven-year battle that could have murdered a small company like Elan, had it not partnered up with the giant Biogen to develop and market the drug together.

But with a decision to share the risk comes a decision to share the spoils. Elan may only now be able to reap the benefits for Tysabri ? and it only gets half of them.

There are few signs of this trend waning: VCs love it, because taking a small unprofitable biotech company public to fund ongoing research is all but impossible, and they aren?t going to carry it the whole way. Entrepreneurs love it, because they can get rewarded for initial discovery and don?t have to build out the testing, approval, and sales infrastructure from scratch. And big pharma really loves it, because they effectively outsource early drug research.

The picture for returns, when it comes to life sciences, couldn?t be more different than the consumer Web: No highs, but a steady track record with few lows either.

Investing in the two areas has always taken a different passion and knowledge base. But increasingly it?s just a completely different business with different risk profiles, investment expectations and fund cycles ? about as similar as private equity and venture capital. And as Web-focused venture firms fall under pressure to do seed programs and help with recruiting and other high touch services, the two will become even more distinct. (And some would argue cleantech is a third animal with its reliance on subsidies and long-lead market lead times.)

People will cite programs like the incubator RockHealth, funded by many IT investors, as evidence that there?s still some synergy there. But no one at RockHealth is doing medical devices or drug discovery. They?re building things like iPhone apps that sell into the healthcare world. That?s a tech investment that happens to be in the healthcare vertical, not a life sciences deal.

Firms still doing it under one roof will argue there?s instant diversification for LPs. But that?s the LPs? job. The synergies are getting harder and harder to see.

Bids For Princess Beatrice's Bizarre Royal Wedding Hat Pass $120,000

LONDON ? Auction site eBay says a bidder has offered 75,000 pounds ($120,000) for the spiraling headpiece worn by Princess Beatrice to last month's royal wedding.

The 22-year-old granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II startled commentators with the swirling hat she wore to the wedding of her cousin Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The silk Philip Treacy creation has been compared to antlers, a toilet seat and a pretzel, and has been photoshopped into scores of unlikely scenarios on the Internet.

Beatrice has taken the joke in stride and put the hat on sale for charity. Proceeds will go to UNICEF and Children in Crisis.

On Saturday 38 bidders were competing for the hat, described on eBay as a "unique sculptural celebratory headpiece."

The auction ends Sunday.

UK's Cameron backs minister in row over "pleb" swipe at police

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's David Cameron backed a senior minister accused of ranting at policemen in public and calling them "plebs", an old-fashioned insult laden with snobbery that has undermined his party's attempts to shake off its privileged image.

The tirade outside the prime minister's Downing Street office by Andrew Mitchell has embarrassed a Conservative party that is trailing in the polls and struggling to shore up its support at a time of recession, tax increases and spending cuts.

While reports that Mitchell called the officers "morons" were embarrassing, more damaging was the report that he used the word "pleb", a term that is rarely used by a middle or working class person but is soaked in upper class condescension.

The row played into the hands of Conservative critics who think Cameron's centre-right party is run by a rich, lofty group whose policies do little for the majority of voters feeling the pressure of its austerity policies.

Many senior Conservatives are millionaires, educated at Britain's top fee-paying schools and the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Rivals mock them as out-of-touch "toffs", the sort of derogatory term that is politically toxic in class-obsessed Britain. A Conservative politician described Cameron and finance minister George Osborne as "arrogant posh boys" in April.

Cameron's spokesman said on Monday it was time to draw a line under the affair after Mitchell apologized again to police, even while denying using the words attributed to him.

"He has acknowledged that that behaviour was unacceptable and the apology has been accepted," the spokesman said. He would not be drawn on Mitchell's choice of words or whether he was accusing the police of not telling the truth.

"Pleb" is derived from a Latin word denoting people outside the aristocratic class in ancient Rome, for example shopkeepers, skilled or unskilled workers and farmers.

"It is old-fashioned language, it is private language. In public it is pretty awful," Peter York, the author and social commentator, told Reuters. "You certainly wouldn't expect any politician to utter it in a remotely public place."

A leaked police report in the top selling Sun newspaper on Monday said Mitchell had lost his temper when police officers refused to open the main Downing Street gates to allow him to cycle through last Wednesday evening.

BADLY TIMED TIRADE

When they asked him to use a pedestrian gate, the report said Mitchell erupted: "Best you learn your fucking place. You don't run this fucking government. You're fucking plebs."

The timing could not have been worse, coming a day after two unarmed policewomen were killed in a gun and grenade attack in Manchester, northern England.

The Conservatives, who have run Britain in a coalition since 2010, are behind the opposition Labor Party before a 2015 election and the Mitchell row could cut further into their public support if it lingers, analysts said.

"They have been remarkably unsuccessful at killing this story," said John Curtice, politics professor at Strathclyde University in Scotland. "That's certainly a problem."

Mitchell, 56, was educated at the prestigious Rugby School, home of one of the most famous literary bullies, Flashman, in the 19th-century novel "Tom Brown's Schooldays" by Thomas Hughes, an Oxford graduate.

Labor leader Ed Miliband, who also went to Oxford, compared Cameron to Flashman last year for his behaviour in parliament.

Mitchell went on to Cambridge University and served in the British Army before joining the Lazard investment bank and working for a management consultancy. Cameron gave him the job of "chief whip", or party enforcer, earlier this month.

Mitchell said he "did not use the words that have been attributed to me", but repeatedly refused to confirm what he did say during an incident dubbed "Gate-gate" by wags on Twitter.

"It had been the end of a long and extremely frustrating day - not that that is any excuse at all for what happened," Mitchell told reporters in the rain outside his office near Downing Street. "I didn't show the police the amount of respect I should have done."

Labour and police groups called for an inquiry into the events at Downing Street.

Although still unconfirmed, the bad language has fed into a perceptions the Conservatives have not shed the "Nasty Party" tag that dogged them under Margaret Thatcher and John Major in the 1980s and 1990s. Cameron has attempted to soften their policies in areas like gay rights and support for the poor.

"There is this perception that ... they are posh, rich people who are out of touch with the lives of ordinary people," said Wyn Grant, politics professor at Warwick University.

"But if the government stands firm on this, it may simply just go away."
