Stay at Home Dad and College Educator Tim J. Myers Newly ...

Writer, educator, story teller and stay at home dad, Tim J. Myers,
writes about raising his daughter in his new book Glad To Be Dad: A
Call to Fatherhood which debuts at #5 in Amazon?s Fatherhood
category. In his honest, direct, and at times hysterical book, Tim
writes, "Being domestically involved isn't a step-by-step process
like bicycle repair or learning to type. It's much more about who
you are as a person and what you truly value, about that kind of
growth - and it has far more to do with attitude than with skills.'
NewsGrabberJC.Pro An excellent, 'sweet' piece of powerful thoughts.--Susan DeMaggio, Editor Detroit's Metro Parent

After staying home with his two sons for a year and his daughter since her infancy, Tim J. Myers knows all about being a stay-at-home parent. He knows the most effective cleaning products, which snacks to buy, and has developed a ?housemaid?s knee.? He has experienced first-hand the profound influence fathers have on their children, along with the challenges of being a committed parent. By recounting personal experiences, offering honest, sincere opinions, and including quizzes for fatherly-preparedness, Tim Myers emphasizes the importance of fatherly contribution and influence in the home. He shows fathers that they are not only vital to home life, but that fatherhood also brings great joy into men?s lives, not to mention a surprising amount of plain old fun. In addition, Myers details the essential role of fathers, and the very real (and sometimes frustrating) transition into taking an active role in home life. Poignant, funny, and inspiring, Glad to be Dad is perfect for both aspiring fathers and seasoned veterans.

As a top Amazon review stated: "Early on in this book Myers writes, ?The phrase easier said than done applies with particular force to certain activities, things like bungee jumping, sky diving, or Formula-1 racing. Spending time at home with kids, it turns out, falls into the same category, and not all men are fully aware of this. Those who think it's a piece of cake are simply ignorant: unless you have first-hand experience, it's hard to know just how challenging this job can be.' That is a sample of how he approaches the reader. He also offers such hilarious quizzes such as Domestic Vocabulary Quiz (likely you'll score poorly), and sums up the nuances of being the primary household person as the following: `Being domestically involved isn't a step-by-step process like bicycle repair or learning to type. It's much more about who you are as a person and what you truly value, about that kind of growth - and it has far more to do with attitude than with skills.' And that is where this book steps away from the comedic stage and offers some sage philosophy of why so many homes are fractured and how that is affecting the development of our society. Hefty words for thought...and action."

Tim Myers is a writer, songwriter, storyteller, and lecturer at Santa Clara University in Silicon Valley. His ebook "Glad to Be Dad: A Call to Fatherhood" is out from Familius.com. His children's books have won recognition from the New York Times, NPR, the Smithsonian, Nickelodeon, and others. He has published over 120 poems, won a first prize in a poetry contest judged by John Updike, has a poetry chapbook out, won a major prize in science fiction, was nominated for a Pushcart for an essay, and has published much other fiction and non-fiction for children, adolescents, and adults. He won the2012 SCBWI Magazine Merit Award for Fiction, and the West Coast Songwriters Saratoga Chapter Song of the Year award.

Bill Clinton: Brazil No. 1 among rising economies

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazil appears to have the best long-term prospects among rising economic powers, thanks to its stable policy framework, ample natural resources and good relationship with its neighbors, former U.S. President Bill Clinton said on Tuesday in a ringing endorsement of an economy that has struggled lately.

"If I were just sitting in a room betting on the future of rising countries, I'd bet on Brazil first," Clinton said.

Brazil's economy has been stagnant for the past year and is expected to grow only 1.7 percent in 2012 - less than half the projected average in Latin America. Some business leaders believe the country's credit and commodities-led growth model has been nearly exhausted and are calling on the government to cut taxes and take other urgent steps to stimulate investment.

Clinton, speaking at a forum of bankers in S?o Paulo, acknowledged some problems but said Brazil still "looks really good" compared to crisis-ridden economies in Europe and the United States.

He said Brazil also compared favorably to India, which is struggling with a stagnant economic reform agenda, and China, which has tensions with some of its neighbors and is at risk of suffering from water scarcity and other depletion of natural resources, he said.

China "would kill to have the environmental problems you guys do," Clinton told the mostly Brazilian audience.

Clinton spoke alongside two other prominent leaders who also championed free markets and globalization during the 1990s - former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Brazilian ex-President Fernando Henrique Cardoso.

Blair cited Brazil's progress in reducing poverty and inequality over the past two decades, saying they were an inspiration for African countries where he has been spending his time lately -- and also proof that liberal capitalism still works, despite the extended crises in the European Union and other rich nations.

Brazil has lifted more than 30 million people - or roughly 15 percent of its population - into the middle class during the past decade.

The most bearish of the speakers was Cardoso, who is widely credited with laying the groundwork for Brazil's recent boom by getting rid of endemic inflation that peaked above 2,500 percent before he became president in 1995.

Cardoso, whose party is now in opposition, said President Dilma Rousseff and her predecessor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, have relied too much on stimulating public and private-sector credit, while slipping on the fiscal rigor that helped his government establish Brazil's credibility in global markets.

"There's an impression that things are the same (as in the 1990s) but in reality there has been a lot of change," Cardoso said.

The forum was held by investment bank Itau BBA, a unit of Itau Unibanco Holding, Brazil's largest private-sector bank.

French fin min announces gasoline price cut

PARIS (AP) ? France's finance minister says the price of gasoline and diesel fuel will be lowered by up to six euro cents per liter in a move aimed at fulfilling a key campaign pledge of President Francois Hollande.

Announcing the move following a meeting Tuesday with oil industry leaders, Pierre Moscovici says that oil companies have agreed to cut gasoline prices by one to three cents a liter, and the government will take another three cents off through a cut in taxes levied on gasoline and diesel fuel.

Easing the pressure of rising prices on French households was one of Hollande's key campaign pledges. Gasoline and diesel fuel prices have neared record highs in recent months on the back of rising oil prices.

Tips For Safe Social Networking | Scion Ideas

Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter, Ning, Digg, MeetUp, blogs, etc.,? ? the number of social networking sites and tools is exploding. Social networking is the?killer app?of the Internet for everyone ? not?just the texting teenybopper crowd. Such?sites have breached the walls of the corporate firewall, are a part of our most important smartphone apps, are a vital tool for any serious job search, and are the new way to connect with current and new friends. Social networking is about?self forming groups, a dynamic author Clay Shirky examines in his book? Here Comes Everybody: The Power Of Organizing With Organizations.? But? using social networking tools and sites seems to be in direct conflict with another important principle of using the Internet ? protect your identity from identity theft.?? Participating? in online social networking sites? leaves a trail of personal information that can make stealing your identity a whole lot easier.? What?s a current-day Internet user to do? Should we go blithely along like a fish protected in a larger school of potential identity theft victims, or maybe we should forego social networking altogether? No and no. Instead each of us should take responsibility for protecting ourselves. Here are some points by wphacks.

Publicity of Personal Information

When you sign up on a social networking site, make sure you don?t input your full name, just set a name that can be recognized by your true friends. Never input important information such as date of birth, year graduated, university where you graduated, where you?re residing, your contact #, where you are working, and personal questions for retrieving accounts, as it may come back to harm you. I?m not saying that all this information should be a false, you should just leave these fields blank. This information can be used against you by identity thieves and/or be used for scamming purposes.

Assume Everything is Public

In every thing you do on social networking sites, assume at some point it will become public. Never post anything online that can harm your business or company as it can use against you, including chats and conversations which have the potential to be saved and posted to the public.

Images on the internet are permanent

We all know that the internet can duplicate any content or image in the blink of an eye. It can spread a thousand times faster than bacteria. And, even when you delete these images, there is still a chance that your photos/images have been duplicated, copied, or cached by another internet service. This is an important point/detail that companies should keep in mind. Businesses should be careful about what they put in SNS profiles. Everything should be about brand building and reputation management, or else it has the potential to ruin your company?s reputation.

Side step location based services

Never use the location status if you?re in Starbucks having a business meeting or appointment as it can give the people an access to where you are located.

Don?t post anything sensitive

I would like to emphasize the need to avoid posting anything that is potential for any sensitive business which can harm you and your business or company. This could be a leak point for your competitors to see where and who you are dealing with and provide your competitors with an edge.

Using social networking websites can give you many benefits, but keep in mind the potential danger. It is best to hire a social media agency to avoid risks and let them take care of the social media activities for you.

Hays House... Misadventures In Parenting: A Union of Imperfect ...

Did you ever meet a couple that made you start out with a "Hugh?" and end up with an "Ah hah!"? This is the story of my wonderful brother in law and his oh, so beautiful, new bride.

The first time we met Nicki was at a family funeral. It was a very unexpected loss and my husband's paternal grandmother was the matriarch of our family. So losing our Gigi was even more earth shattering. We were at the visitation when in walked a raven haired beauty no one really recognized and when our little Jeffy was talking to her for an extended period of time the over-protective Hays hackles went up! I can still hear the hum of the room. Everyone was questioning the meaning of the relationship. Our little Jeff had never brought a female friend home before so there were endless questions. Finally, we were told she was just a friend who was concerned for him and had driven up to pay her respects and offer support. Puhlease!!! No one bought that! Except maybe Jeff.

And very shortly after that our little Nicki was making the Hays family rounds. We all knew before Jeff did that he was a complete goner. But I didn't really understand the relationship at first. Jeff has always been a cut up. Loud, slightly obnoxious, completely over the top and comfortable being the center of attention. Nicki was quiet, always smiling but not boisterous, sweet and loving and great with kids. Don't get me wrong, I totally think Nicki has no problem letting her freak flag fly, she just reserves it for very specific occasions. Jeff's has always been out there for the world to see. Then, like in all good things provided by our Heavenly Father, I began to see the balance. The way she rounded him out. The way he made her laugh and the way she made him grow. They are perfectly imperfect and so wonderfully right.

It was while I was in the shower that I had my final come to Jesus moment with their relationship on Friday before the rehearsal. I finally understood why their relationship and their love was so beautiful to me. The hubs and I were just the same. Everyone questioned me at first as to what it was that attracted me to him? What did I want from him/expect him to be able to give me? He was so different than me. He was so not my typical "type". Not the kind of guy everyone expected me to be with.? And I had fought it so much myself. In the beginning. I tried to break it off. I tried to dissuade him. I told him he deserved better, more, a good little Catholic girl with no baggage. He didn't want that, he wanted me! In all my imperfection I was perfect for him.

I believe God creates an individual for each of us. The sharer of our rib, so to speak. The person we cannot imagine our future without. The one soul we know as well and sometimes better than our own. And God knows us both, inside and out. This is a wonderful miracle given to us by our Father. I am so blessed to be able to share in and witness one such joining in my wonderful baby brother (in law) and his beautiful bride.

Congratulations! We love you both very, very much, Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Hays!

Baby Boomer Health ? Still Rocking And Rolling by Beauty Shop

Baby Boomer Health ? Still Rocking And Rolling

The baby boomer generation is those that are in their 50?s and early 60?s. This generation is considered to be in their senior years; however, they are still stressed, still leading youthful lives, and still, in most cases, working as hard as ever. Baby boomers have unique concerns these days in regards to their health.

In many cases, this generation is conscious about their diet and health, they are exercising and looking to keep fit for as long as they possibly can. They go to the gym quite often, they enjoy hiking, and you never know when you will find them outside with the grandchildren actually playing baseball than simply watching them.

The AMA (American Medical Association) tells us that of the baby boomer generation, there are forty million people living with arthritis, while greater than fifty million are suffering from heart disease, when it comes to people in their 50?s. One thing you will find about this generation is that they are determined, optimistic, and confident. They have no troubles in getting educated about the health concerns that face them and will try any methods, including alternative methods of receiving the care that they need.

Stresses come easily in the life of a baby boomer, particularly because of financial obligations and the costs of healthcare. Even though your children may be grown and may have children of their own, it is more than likely that because the cost of living is so high and the economy is at a low, that living at home with their parents is still a prospect or even an issue. Couple those stresses with the fact that many baby boomers? parents are still with them and aging, so they have to look after their care as well, making sure they eat right and get to their doctor appointments.

Then you add on the stresses of work, the commute, and the traffic, plus all of life?s other responsibilities and it?s no wonder that it can start to take a toll on your health. You work, you lack sleep, and you take care of your family. You really do not have a great deal of time left to focus on your own health, life, and well-being.

It is never easy to deal with everything that life throws at you, but you should make sure that you are focused on your own health and needs as well as that of your family?s. You need to make sure that you are healthy and taken care of before you can take care of anyone else.

Nick Hurd writes about aging and baby boomer generation and how to not only cope with the changes, but live a very healthy and active life. www.youreover50.com information for baby boomers and beyond. More information about Senior Health Care

Matthews: Romney is too deep in bed with GOP to ever be moderate again

Let me finish tonight with the wayward shift of the rightward party.?

I have thought for awhile that if President Obama were to lose this election, it would be because voters believed both candidates?he and Mr. Romney?were both to the left of where they say they are. ?

Obama would successfully be accused of being intent on a far larger government role than he has supported, Romney being able to sell himself as a candidate far more moderate?far more to the left?of the commitments he made in the primaries and since.?

Now, given the events of the last weeks, I think that scenario is unlikely. It's increasingly obvious that Mitt Romney, whatever stance he took as governor in Massachusetts, has married the right wing of his party: the neo-cons, the no-taxers, the religious right, the hardliners against abortions rights. He is not, nor can he be confused, with the guy who pushed health care in Massachusetts, who once called himself stronger on gay rights than Ted Kennedy. That memory is as faded as the old newspapers of that era?if any remain anywhere?except in Romney's scrapbook.?

No, I think the rise of Todd Akin, the picking of Paul Ryan, the emergence of Ryan's hardline position on abortion, the whole menu of it means that Romney has set the table for himself. He's made too many deals with the right that he cannot disentangle himself from.?

He's one of the people now he's gotten in bed with?and that, ladies and gentlemen, is a fact.?

1 Family, 3 Orphans, 3 Families, 1 Church ? Gustavo's Grand - Blog

We are so excited to announce that a family is moving forward to adopt Gustavo! ?Katie and Steve met Gustavo shortly before he left for Colombia, and knew right away that this was more than a chance encounter. ?Pretty soon, they were working on their Letter of Intent to adopt Gustavo, and they kick-started the whole (long) process.

Katie and Steve do not have children of their own, but are very invested in the lives of their nieces and nephews, most of whom live nearby and visit their home often. ?Their love for children is obvious when they host friends and family at their home, including entertaining other Kidsave kids and their Summer Miracles host families in recent years.

So,?assuming that they are successful in completing this adoption,?here?s the really cool part: ?There was 1 family from which the 3 children come?our daughter, Daniela; their sister, Yaqueline; and Gustavo. ?Each of the 3 children have found their forever family, and all 3 families go to the same church. ?It?s so awesome! ?They will have the ability to keep and even strengthen their family connection.

So I kind of think this will be my last post about Gustavo, because it is no longer my story, but is becoming the story of the birth of a family. ?Steve and Katie would appreciate your prayers as they begin trudging through the bureaucratic process of international adoption.

Tell EVERYONE about Gustavo!!

NBC: Michael J. Fox will return to series TV

NEW YORK (AP) ? NBC has made it official: Michael J. Fox is coming back to series TV more than a decade after he left to concentrate on fighting Parkinson's disease.

His new comedy series, based loosely on his personal life, has a 22-episode commitment from NBC and is set to premiere in fall 2013, the network announced Monday.

The single-camera comedy, thus far untitled, will feature Fox as a husband and father of three from New York City who is dealing with family, career and challenges that include Parkinson's, the network said. No further casting was announced.

The executive producers and co-creators are Will Gluck ("Easy A," ''Friends with Benefits") and Sam Laybourne ("Cougar Town," ''Arrested Development"), with Gluck producing through his Sony Television-based Olive Bridge Entertainment. He also will direct the pilot.

Reports of Fox's plans to return emerged last week.

Fox first won stardom for his work as Alex Keaton on the hit comedy "Family Ties," which began its seven-season run on NBC in 1982.

"To bring Michael J. Fox back to NBC is a supreme honor," said Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, "and we are thrilled that one of the great comedic television stars is coming home again."

He called Fox "utterly relatable, optimistic and in a class by himself."

"I'm extremely pleased to be back at NBC with a great creative team and a great show," Fox said.

The 51-year-old actor was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991. In 2000, he left his ABC comedy "Spin City" after four seasons, saying he intended to focus on helping find a cure for the disease.

He founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which is dedicated to finding a cure for sufferers of Parkinson's disease while promoting the development of improved therapies and raising public awareness of the disease.

Since then, he limited his acting appearances to guest shots on series including "Rescue Me," ''Boston Legal," ''Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The Good Wife." But in May, he told ABC News that a new drug regimen has helped him control the tics that are a result of the disease and could allow him to take on more acting roles.

His feature films include the "Back to the Future" trilogy, "Teen Wolf," ''Bright Lights, Big City" and "Casualties of War." He has won five Emmy awards.

Obama takes aim at Republicans in surprise news conference

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama hammered Republicans over taxes and women's rights on Monday in a surprise appearance in the White House briefing room that was meant to knock his rivals on what was already a bad news day for them.

The Democratic president has been criticized by reporters and Republican political operatives for not holding a news conference in roughly two months while his opponent, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, has taken questions from his traveling press corps more regularly.

Obama's unannounced appearance addressed that critique and, more strategically, gave him a chance to pile on the opposing party while it scrambled to recover from news reports about one of its lawmakers skinny-dipping in Israel's Sea of Galilee and a congressman's widely condemned comments about rape.

Obama zeroed in on those remarks by U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin of Missouri, calling them offensive and saying politicians should not be making healthcare decisions for women.

"Rape is rape and the idea that we should be parsing and qualifying and slicing what types of rape we are talking about doesn't make sense to the American people and certainly doesn't make sense to me," Obama said.

Akin, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives who is in a hotly contested race with Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill in the November 6 election, said in an interview Sunday that women have biological defenses to prevent pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." He later said he misspoke.

Obama is polling better than Romney among women, and Akin's comments could feed into the perception - trumpeted by the Obama campaign - that a Republican in the White House would hurt women's rights.

During the news conference, Obama also distanced himself from an ad by Priorities USA Action, a Democratic "Super PAC," which ties Romney to the death of a woman whose steelworker husband lost his job after Romney's company, Bain Capital, closed the plant where he worked.

"I don't think that Governor Romney is somehow responsible for the death of the woman that was portrayed in that ad," Obama said, noting that he had not approved the commercial.

"Now in contrast, you've got Governor Romney creating as a centerpiece of his campaign this notion that we're taking the work requirement out of welfare," Obama said, referring to claims by the Romney campaign that Obama was rolling back welfare reform. The claims have been debunked by fact-checkers.

TAXES, TONE

Romney's team has accused Obama of negative, divisive campaigning, a charge the president rejected.

"We point out sharp differences between the candidates, but we don't go out of bounds," Obama said. "Nobody accused Mr. Romney of being a felon," he added in response to a question.

In fact, Obama's deputy campaign manager, Stephanie Cutter, in July said that if Romney misrepresented his position at Bain to the Securities and Exchange Commission, that could be felony. Her comments came after the Boston Globe reported Romney had remained registered as a top official at Bain three years after he said he left the firm to run the Salt Lake City Olympics.

"The president deliberately mislead voters by falsely stating that no one in his campaign had accused Mitt Romney of committing a crime," Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said.

The Obama campaign has kept up pressure on Romney over his tenure at Bain Capital and over his decision not to release several years of tax returns as previous presidential candidates, including his own father, have traditionally done.

Romney, one of the wealthiest men ever to run for U.S. president, has released his 2010 returns and promised to release his full 2011 returns but nothing more.

Obama said voters expected candidates to be an "open book" about their finances when running for the White House.

"Particularly when we're going to be having a huge debate about how we reform our tax code and how we pay for the government that we need, I think people want to know that everybody has been playing by the same rules, including people who are seeking the highest office in the land," Obama said.

"This is not an entitlement, being president of the United States. This is a privilege. And we've got to put ourselves before the American people to make our case."

Decorating the Cookies ~ What You'll Need

*Check each cookie below for what you need, if you only want to make certain cookies

?

Decorating Steps

For all of the cookies besides the teddy bear, you'll need to outline and flood your cookie with the icing. ?Here is a video on how to do that. For detailed decorating tips,?this tutorial may be helpful for you.

Squirrel Cookie:

Besides the following instructions, you may want to add a deeper color stripe on the squirrel's tail, change his color to brown (I was having fun with the colors), or anything else you can think of to make him more squirrel-like. I thought mine ended up looking a bit like a kangaroo! Or like a squirrel-a-roo. ?Thanks to @poodlesandpearls?on Instagram here?for that, it made me giggle. Anyways, here we go:

1. Using a #2 piping tip, outline and flood your cookie with icing.?

2. Let the base dry for at least 6-12 hours.

3. Add a black icing dot for the eye, using a #1.5 tip, and a light orange dot for the nose. Adhere the edible pink pearl with a small dab of icing. You can stop at this point if you like? Here's what he looks like so far:

4. If you'd like to add the 'leafy' details, press a small amount of green gumpaste into the dogwood center mold. Scrape the excess off the back with a palette knife. Using the same gumpaste or a slighty darker green, roll it about 2-3mm thick. Punch out the leaf shape and adhere to cookie with icing.

5. Add some lines on his tail and for his leg, using a #1.5 piping tip. If you'd like, add sanding sugar while the icing is wet.

(Hubbers liked it better without the sanding sugar, I liked it better with). Let your cookies dry and you're done!

Star Cookie:

1. Using a #2 piping tip, outline and flood your cookie with icing.?

2. Let the base dry for at least 6-12 hours.?{Instagram pic below~ Rise filter and Lenslight App}

3.?Add some lines using a #1.5 piping tip.

4.?Let the icing dry.

5. Spray a little pearl luster dust on the cookie?and you're done!

Moon Cookie:

1. Using a #2 piping tip, outline and flood your cookie with white icing.?

2. Immediately after, pipe a small dot of blue on the white icing, for the eye of the moon. (I would make my blue darker next time. It's difficult to see his eye).

3. Let the base dry for at least 6-12 hours.

4. Spray a little pearl luster dust on the cookie and you're done!

Teddy Bear Cookies:

1. Using grass?piping tip 233,?pipe short lines of light brown icing fur all over the surface of the teddy bear. Again, the icing needs to be thicker than flooding consistency for the 'fur' on this cookie.?Click here?to see a YouTube video on finding the thicker icing consistency.?(Same icing used to stencil).

2. Use a very light shade of brown flood consistency icing and a #2 tip to pipe circles for the teddy bear's ears, snout, paws and feet. I was a little distracted when I did his feet. Can you see why?

3. Let the base dry for at least 6-12 hours.

4. Add black flood consistency icing eyes and nose using a #1.5 piping tip.?

5. Adhere the gingham ribbon with a small dab of royal icing.

6. Press a small amount of brown gum paste or fondant into the gingerbread man mold. Scrape the excess off the back with a palatte knife. If the gum paste or fondant is too soft and isn't coming off cleanly, place the mold in the freezer for 5 minutes and try again.

?

7. Add tiny dots of icing for the buttons and for the eyes (Looking back, I should have done the eyes too!). Adhere the gingerbread man with a small dab of royal icing.

Done!

Baby Whale Cookie:

1. Using a #2 piping tip, outline and flood your cookie with icing.?

2. Immediately after, pipe a small dot of icing for the eye. (I would make my blue darker next time, like the gift bag I got the inspiration from below. It's difficult to see his eye).

3. Let the base dry for at least 6-12 hours.

4. If you like, add a little ribbon embellishment by adhering with a small dab of royal icing. Finished!

And if you haven't had the pleasure of viewing the delicious food and recipes on Picky Palate, head on over?and enjoy.?

Have fun!

xo,

Marian

Biofuel Tax Policy: Short Term Progress, Long Term Challenges ...

Brian Siu, Policy Analyst, Washington, D.C.

Runaway oil dependence puts our environment, public health and national security at risk.? That?s why the Senate Finance Committee?s recent extension of the cellulosic ethanol income tax credit is welcome news. This incentive, which provides $1.01 per gallon of cellulosic ethanol, will help limit oil demand by encouraging private investment in cleaner, safer alternatives. But there?s still room for improvement. Over the long term, the tax code must incorporate features that address the environmental risks of biofuel production and encourage the development of the best-performing biofuels that protect our climate and natural resources.

As my colleague Cai Steger writes, the Senate Finance package continues critical incentives for early stage renewable energy technologies that benefit public health and the environment. As a potentially low-impact alternative to oil, cellulosic ethanol is on this list. Cellulosic fuels can be produced from a wide range of feedstocks including waste streams, agricultural residues, and sustainably grown energy crops.? Indeed, the diversity of cellulosic material suggests substantial potential resources to create biofuels that do not compete with our food, feed supplies or wildlife habitat.

Commercializing these better biofuels requires continuous investment and experience to reduce cost and risk. Investments so far have yielded progress, but technological maturity has been slower than expected.? Even so, slow deployment hardly negates the critical need for sustainable alternatives to oil. Rather than retreating, the Senate Finance Committee correctly reaffirmed its commitment to solving our oil dependence and pollution challenges by supporting the next generation of biofuels.

The Finance Committee also amended the incentive to qualify algal fuels.? This change will further stimulate investment in high-potential biofuel feedstocks that were not included when the credit was originally codified. ?Algal fuels have substantial potential advantages such as low greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water quality improvement, high energy density, and compliance with existing infrastructure, meaning they can ?drop in? to existing pipelines and fuel storage tanks. The Finance Committee likewise acted wisely when it chose to encourage investment in these resources.

Now Congress must act with even more foresight. ?Extending and modifying these incentives was the right thing to do, but the tax code is in desperate need of revision.? When these incentives were created, Congress did not capture the risks of careless biofuel development.? Responsibly produced next-generation biofuels have the potential to provide substantial environmental advantages through reduced lifecycle GHG emissions and farming practices that result in cleaner water, healthier soil and less impact on food and feed prices.? But biofuels can also harm land, water, and wildlife if made from unsustainable biomass sources.? Reckless development of biofuels without safeguards and incentives to encourage farmers to manage biomass crops in ways that minimize tillage, fertilizer use, erosion, and runoff will undermine their environmental potential.

As Congress continues to evaluate the tax code, it should embed environmental performance provisions into tax incentives so that the next generation of biofuels avoids the mistakes of the past. Calibrating incentive payments to environmental performance would drive investment towards biofuels that offer the greatest balance of energy supply, environmental preservation, and public health benefits.? For now, we applaud Congress for preserving momentum in uncertain times. ?But as it takes up deeper tax reform, it must update the tax code to ensure that these fuels deliver on their promise.

Essential Tools for Internet Marketing | Coyne Technology Systems

It is true that you can never have a successful Internet marketing campaign if you don?t have at least a working grasp of how it works, the necessary skills to perform common to complex Internet marketing tasks, and of course a nearly inexhaustible supply of patience, perseverance, and creativity. Having the right products or services also matters. But what many people forget is that Internet marketing also relies on having essential tools in your disposal.

Here?s a list of what you should definitely have in your Internet marketing toolkit.

  • Email accounts ? It?s one of the easiest and most secure ways to communicate online so be sure you have one. As much as possible, opt for a paid email account to enjoy larger web storage space and other advanced email settings and features. Having a paid email address also adds to your professional image, and that never hurts.
  • Auto-responder ? It?s always good business to show your customers that you care, and having an auto-responder is definitely one way to do that. Auto-responders provide people with the reassurance that you have received their emails. They can also communicate with your customers and other parties about your usual respond time so that they need not wonder how long they?ll have to wait to hear from you.
  • List server ? This is another email-based tool but this time it acts as your virtual email manager, automatically categorizing your incoming mail as well as taking over schedule and management of your outbound emails, such as the ones that serve as your weekly or monthly newsletter or promotional emails that introduce your newest products and services.
  • Blogs ? Even if you are not fond of writing, it is still essential that you have your own blog. And yes, it?s still important even if you already have a website. A regularly and well-maintained blog can only add to your credibility. It may also add to your popularity since the somewhat informal atmosphere in blogs allows you and your target market to interact with each other with greater ease.
  • PDF converters ? First of all, PDFs provide your data better protection against being copied or plagiarized compared to word documents. Secondly, they tend to read better on most mobile devices and e-book readers, which is essential if you have a free guide or e-book to give away.
  • Websites ? If necessary, even a free or temporary and static web page would do. What matters is that you are showing your target market that you mean to stay and you have nothing to hide. Most Internet users tend to shy away from businesses or professionals without their websites because for them this presents either unprofessionalism or an unwillingness to divulge certain types of information to the public.
  • Broadband Expert Internet service ? Lastly, it is always a good idea to have the fastest and most reliable Internet connection for your work. Slow Internet is only an unnecessary delay and would likely prevent you from effectively communicating with other people online as well.

If all these tools are present in your Internet marketing tool kit, then you are definitely ready to ?construct? the ideal campaign for your business!

Wife of Md. man abducted in Pakistan urges return

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The wife of a Maryland man abducted in Pakistan is pleading for his safe return on the one-year anniversary of his kidnapping, saying her husband is in poor health and is missed by grandchildren who ask for him every day.

Warren Weinstein, a 71-year-old aid worker from Rockville, Md., was kidnapped last August after gunmen tricked his guards and broke into his home in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore. Al-Qaida released a video in May in which Weinstein said he would be killed unless President Barack Obama agreed to the group's demands. It was not clear when the video was recorded. The White House has called for Weinstein's immediate release but has said it won't negotiate with al-Qaida.

His wife, Elaine, observed the anniversary of his disappearance Monday with a statement urging his release. She said he suffers from a heart condition, severe asthma and high blood pressure and fears that his health "will deteriorate if he is not allowed to see the doctors and specialists that have helped keep him alive in recent years.

"Our grandchildren are growing and changing so fast. They miss their grandfather and ask for him every day. It is so difficult to explain why he can't be with them," the statement reads in part. "It is impossible to describe the pain and sadness my daughters and I feel. We are simply heart sick. I always imagined growing old with Warren and enjoying our family together."

Weinstein was the country director in Pakistan for J.E. Austin Associates, a U.S.-based development contractor that advises different Pakistani business and government sectors. The company has said Weinstein worked with a wide range of Pakistani government agencies, and that his work helped create hundreds of well-paying jobs and raise the standard of living in communities where the businesses are located. He had told his staff he expected to wrap up his latest project and move out of Pakistan within days.

"Warren loves Pakistan and lived there for eight years so he could dedicate his time and energy to working with the people. I don't understand why he was taken," Elaine Weinstein said in her statement.

In the video released in May by al-Qaida's media arm and posted on militant websites, Weinstein sits in front of a white background, near books and what appears to be a plate of food, and makes a direct appeal to the president.

"My life is in your hands, Mr. President," Weinstein says. "If you accept the demands, I live; if you don't accept the demands, then I die."

The video came several months after one release in December by al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who said Weinstein would be released if the U.S. stopped airstrikes in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen. He also demanded the release of all al-Qaida and Taliban suspects around the world.

The FBI has been investigating the kidnapping, but Jacqueline Maguire, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Washington field office, said the bureau cannot discuss ongoing investigations.

Celebrities Sound Off on Paul Ryan as Vice President

So, Paul Ryan may be the next President of the United States. Vice President, we mean. Vice President of the United States.

While opinions spread around the country regarding Mitt Romney's running mate, let's go to Hollywood for the reaction of several celebrities to the news. All courtesy of Twitter...

Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney

Elizabeth Banks: "I can confirm categorically that I am NOT Mitt Romney's VP nominee. #gamechange."

Michael Ian Black: "Romney/Ryan = same initials as Ronald Reagan. THINK ABOUT IT!!!"

Andy Cohen: I really hope someone has the guts to ask Paul Ryan's stance on the KStew/RPatz situation in California. #NeedClarification

Sanjay Gupta: #43 on the list of things that make you feel old: the VP candidate is younger than you are. paul ryan was born in 1970.

Eva Longoria: Romney's VP pick voted against equal pay for women and repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. We can't go backward.

Michael Moore: Channeling Bush, war supporters/military dodgers Romney and Ryan insult those who served by using battleship as their prop.

Rupert Murdoch: Thank God! Now we might have a real election on the great issues of the day. Paul Ryan almost perfect choice.

Andy Richter: I think saying "worst recovery in 70 years" is kinda cute. Doesn't at all beg the phrase "worst recession in 70 years."

Russell Simmons: Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, two men who will destroy our people...

Olivia Wilde: Two R's won't make it right. Romney/Ryan are Wrong for America.

What do YOU think? Was Ryan a solid choice?

Lillibridge, Indians keep Red Sox slumping

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:41 p.m. ET Aug. 11, 2012

CLEVELAND (AP) - Brent Lillibridge enjoyed his brief stay in Boston, and then had more fun helping the Cleveland Indians beat his former Red Sox teammates.

Lillibridge homered, drove in two runs and scored on a squeeze bunt to back Zack McAllister's strong pitching in the Indians' 5-2 victory on Saturday night.

Lillibridge also threw out a runner at the plate, made an acrobatic tag at third base, and was cheered by a crowd that probably was scratching its head at why someone with a .181 batting average was in the lineup.

"It's been a rough year, so it felt really good to contribute," said Lillibridge, who was traded from Chicago to Boston to Cleveland in less than month.

"He was huge," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "He's very versatile and did a lot tonight."

Acta was more delighted with the rookie McAllister (5-4), who working a career-high eight innings.

"Zach was THE man out there," Acta said. "Right-hand batters were 0 for 14 against him. He had 19 of 27 first-pitch strikes and gave a rest to our bullpen. He was just fantastic."

McAllister allowed three hits, including a two-run double by Adrian Gonzalez. He struck out four without issuing a walk.

"The kid was throwing the ball where he wanted to throw it," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said. "That low and away pitch was really effective."

Chris Perez pitched the ninth to earn his 31st save in 35 chances for Cleveland, 3-1 since an 11-game losing streak.

Boston has lost eight of 11.

Lillibridge, acquired July 24 from Boston for minor league pitcher Jose De La Torre, tied a career high with three hits. He hit his first homer in nearly a year and had an RBI single off Franklin Morales (3-2). He raised his average 21 points to .202 and doubled his season RBI output to four.

Lillibridge made it 1-0 in the third with his first homer since Aug. 31, 2011, when he was with the White Sox. After hitting 13 homers for Chicago last year, he was sent to Boston on June 24 in the deal for Kevin Youkilis.

He joked with shortstop Mike Aviles during the game.

"I told Mike I didn't expected to beat up on the Red Sox," Lillibridge said. "They are a good group of guys."

Lillibridge also was involved in three odd plays in the field as Boston went ahead 2-1 in the fourth.

After Jacoby Ellsbury doubled, McAllister fielded Carl Crawford's bunt and turned to third, where Lillibridge was off the bag. Ellsbury advanced, and Crawford was safe, too, on McAllister's late throw to first.

Next, Dustin Pedroia hit a roller to Lillibridge, who had Ellsbury caught between third and home, but couldn't make a play anywhere, loading the bases.

Gonzalez followed with a drive high off the wall in left, scoring two runs. Pedroia also tried to score and was thrown out on a strong relay throw by Lillibridge.

"We gave them five outs that inning," Acta said. "But Zach didn't get rattled, and we came back and won. Everything was possible because of Zach's effort."

Cleveland tied it at 2 in the fifth. Brantley walked, moved up on a balk, took third on a groundout, and scored on Lillibridge's line single to left.

"I ended up just trying to drive in more runs than I let in," said Lillibridge, who added another defensive gem.

In the sixth, Ellsbury was out trying to stretch a leadoff double. Lillibridge took the throw from center fielder Brantley and made a sprawling tag on the infield side of the bag.

In the bottom half, after a walk and hit batter, Cleveland executed a double steal. Morales intentionally walked Carlos Santana and was replaced by Andrew Miller. Brantley's sacrifice fly made it 3-2.

Morales, a converted reliever making his seventh start, gave up only the two hits to Lillibridge in 5 2-3 innings, but allowed three runs.

Lillibridge opened the seventh with a hustle double. He took third on a groundout, and scored on Lou Marson's bunt to make it 4-2.

Ezequiel Carrera had an RBI single in the eighth for Cleveland.

NOTES: The start was delayed 18 minutes because Indians Hall of Fame ceremonies ran long. Right-hander Gaylord Perry, late outfielder Jack Graney, and trainer Jim Warfield were all inducted. ... Indians RHP Roberto Hernandez will start Wednesday in Los Angeles, his first game since being arrested in the Dominican Republic in January. It was discovered he was 31, three years older than listed, and using the identity of a distant cousin, Fausto Carmona. ... Boston called up 3B Danny Valencia from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace Will Middlebrooks, who was placed on the disabled list with a broken right wrist. Boston has had 25 players on the DL this year.
