Downsizing Your SUV for the Sake of Environment - Automotive News

The SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) is a somewhat of modern day paradox. While consumers are facing increasing cost of petrol, the demand for SUVs, otherwise known as gas-guzzlers, is equally growing. Because SUVs consume far more petrol then other cars, and because they emit too much harmful gas, environmentalists are lobbying for consumers to downsize from their SUV for the good of the environment, at least.

Unexpectedly, the green movement found ally in car manufacturers and it happened few years ago when the concept of a crossover first hit the salons. Today, the weird amalgamation between an off-roader and a city car accounts for over 10% of new car sales worldwide. So, what prompted this change?

Paris wants us to go green

The revolution has been brewing for quite some time but it?s only recently that the whole ?downsizing? vibe has received a more official character. The concern about the effects of too many SUVs on the road was recently put to the fore when news was released that the city of Paris was considering putting heavy taxes and possibly even completely banning SUVs from central Paris streets.

The mayor of Paris is considering implementing this move due to the high pollution contributed by the 4x4s, primarily the old-school diesel engines that cough up soot and other heavy particles wherever they go. This move has gained ground because other cities are also considering implementing a similar heavy tax for SUVs. Other cities in France are considering following the move should Paris go ahead, and so are cities elsewhere such as Singapore, London and Berlin.

So, should you really give up on your favourite off-roader and opt for a smaller car? For many people SUVs make a lot of sense, so don?t succumb to the pressure of the lobbyists and tree-huggers just for change?s sake, however, there are many benefits of downsizing your car.

Pros of downsizing

You may have got the hint from the title ? it?s the environment. Large cars do burn more fuel and emit more harmful gases. In order to meet the government?s 2020 target of CO2 cuts, we all need to contribute. Choosing a car that emits less harmful gases is a great way to do your bit for the environment.

Safety ? big cars are more difficult to handle. You?re in charge of more than two tons of metal propelled by a 200bhp-strong power plant. One wrong move and a disaster could be lurking around the corner. Besides, SUVs usually have wider blind spots requiring a higher level of concentration from the driver.

Fuel consumption ? by switching from a full-size 4?4 to a crossover, you can expect to save more than $1000 a year at the fuel station. If we?re comparing cars with petrol engines, most SUVs will struggle to reach 20mpg. Some crossovers, however, can achieve over 30mpg.

Money ? crossovers are cheaper to buy and cheaper to maintain. Even the best SUV breaks down sooner or later ? in a situation like this a big garage bill is inevitable.

Parking and manoeuvring ? finding a spot where your truck can fit in is sometimes very difficult. To add insult to injury, some multi-storey car parks have accidentally (or maybe on purpose) introduced height restrictions meaning that your car is literally banned from getting in.

The main cons of driving a small car

There are two sides to every coin. Although downsizing is a sensible thing to do, if you?ve driven 4x4s for a long time, the first thing you notice with a crossover is that there?s simply not enough space and comfort. Most full-size SUVs can seat 7 adults and tow a 3.5-ton trailer ? something that you?re unlikely to accomplish with a crossover.

You suddenly cannot go where the big guys go. Although the crossovers are often advertised as all-wheel drive vehicles, all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive is not the same thing. SUVs are built to perform on rugged terrains while crossovers are mainly city cars that are designed to look cool. A large 4?4 performs confidently on all surfaces, including wet tarmac. It will never lose control the way front-wheel or rear-wheel drive vehicles would.

Safety ? yes, although safety was previously mentioned as an issue with large cars, it?s proven that SUVs are safer especially in serious crashes. Smaller and lighter cars won?t be able to protect the passengers the way 4x4s can.

Versatility ? smaller cars are not as flexible as SUVs and if we?re looking at a large family you may end up owning two smaller cars, which will actually be more expensive in the long run.

It will be down to everyone?s preferences eventually, however, the current trend seems to be in favour of a more compact crossover. The real question is whether owning a large car is an actual necessity or merely a way to boost the driver?s ego?

Horror possesses box office in quiet end to summer

A late-summer horror tale took possession of the weekend box office as Hollywood quietly wound down a busy season that turned out to be not so busy.

"The Possession" debuted as the No. 1 movie with $21.3 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend, according to studio estimates. The Lionsgate fright flick stars Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as parents of a girl possessed by a demon.

Opening in second-place with $13 million was the Weinstein Co. bootlegging drama "Lawless," with Shia LaBeouf and Guy Pearce in a story of moonshiners pursued by a corrupt lawman during Prohibition.

It was a typically slow Labor Day weekend, ending a summer that failed to live up to Hollywood's expectations.

Studio executives started the season with projections of record business, but revenues dropped 3 percent compared to summer 2011, while attendance was at its lowest in at least 20 years, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Labor Day weekend revenues totaled $134 million, down 3.4 percent from last year's, when "The Help" led with $19.9 million.

Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian said overall domestic revenues for the summer season, from the first weekend in May through Labor Day, came in at $4.275 billion, down from a record $4.4 billion in summer 2011.

The attendance picture was even worse, factoring in this year's higher ticket prices. The number of movie tickets sold over summer was about 533 million, down 4 percent from 2011's and the lowest since Dergarabedian began compiling summer figures 20 years ago.

"We talk about summer being product driven, and it's all about the movies," Dergarabedian said. "While it started off on a really high note, as summer went on, it seemed like the moviegoers were less and less interested in the movies being released."

Back in May, when the superhero sensation "The Avengers" launched the season with a record $207.4 million weekend, Hollywood insiders predicted their best summer ever as a lineup of huge titles was set to hit theaters week after week.

While "The Avengers" and superhero cousins "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Amazing Spider-Man" led the season and movies such as "Ted" and "Brave" topped the $200 million mark, many other movies fell flat. Big stars delivered big busts with Adam Sandler's "That's My Boy" and Johnny Depp's "Dark Shadows," and action tales such as "Battleship" and "Total Recall" also flopped.

There were some smaller surprise successes, including the anti-Barack Obama documentary "2016: Obama's America," which expanded into broader nationwide release and came in at No. 8 with $7.1 million. That raised its total to $20.3 million since the documentary opened in a handful of theaters in mid-July.

The weekend's other new wide release, the family flick "The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure," flopped with just $601,545, averaging a tiny $278 a screen in 2,160 theaters, one of the poorest openings in recent box office history. By comparison, "The Possession" averaged $7,564 in 2,816 cinemas.

Most scary movies draw their biggest crowd on opening day Friday as horror fans turn out for the debut, with business dropping on Saturday. "The Possession" bucked that pattern as the audience grew larger on Saturday then held up solidly through Sunday and Monday.

"Horror films normally don't do that," said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Lionsgate. "If you play to that audience and that audience is satisfied, they talk about it and they come back on Saturday or their friends come back with them on Saturday."

Warner Bros. just opened "The Dark Knight Rises" in China and Italy, lifting the Batman blockbuster back to the No. 1 spot internationally with $46.4 million and raising its overseas total to $575 million.

"The Dark Knight Rises" took in an additional $7.9 million domestically over Labor Day weekend to push its domestic haul to $433.2 million. The film joined 2008's "The Dark Knight" as a $1 billion worldwide hit, with its total now at a few million dollars more than its predecessor's.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Possession," $21.3 million ($3.5 million international).

2. "Lawless," $13 million.

3. "The Expendables 2," $11.2 million ($20 million international).

4. "The Bourne Legacy," $9.4 million ($12.6 million international).

5. "ParaNorman," $8.8 million ($3.1 million international).

6. "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," $8.5 million.

7. "The Dark Knight Rises," $7.9 million ($46.4 million international).

8. "2016: Obama's America," $7.1 million.

9. "The Campaign," $7 million.

10. "Hope Springs," $6 million.

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

1. "The Dark Knight Rises," $46.4 million.

2. "The Amazing Spider-Man," $33.7 million.

3. "The Expendables 2," $20 million.

4. "Total Recall," $13 million.

5. "Brave," $12.9 million.

6. "The Bourne Legacy," $12.6 million.

7. "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," $8.9 million.

Restaurant owners protest Lebanon smoking ban

BEIRUT (AP) ? Restaurant owners and employees have staged a sit-in to protest a new smoking ban in closed public places.

The ban on smoking in places like restaurants and pubs went into effect Monday.

The restaurant owners say the ban will harm their businesses, where many Lebanese are used to smoking cigarettes and puffing on water pipes. Dozens demonstrated in a restaurant district north of Beirut.

Lebanon's parliament passed the law banning smoking in closed public places last year.

Violators will be subject to fines of about $90 to the client and $900 to the offending owner.

The law also bans cigarette advertising.

Smoking is common in Lebanon. A recent study showed about half of Lebanon's adults are smokers.

Officials say Lebanon spends about $350 million annually for treatment of smoking-related diseases.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) refers to promoting your web site so that it rises in the result pages of search engines like google such as Google and Bing. Called SERP briefly for online search engine Result Pages, such rankings are one of the most effective methods of getting customers who?re intrigued in your merchandise. This way once somebody searches for this phrase, your web site should come in the top results.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that hundreds of other businesses are using very much the same Internet web marketing methods to promote their business. Double suicide attack kills 12 in Afghanistan

(AP) ? Two suicide attackers, one driving a fuel tanker, blew themselves up near a U.S. base in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday, killing at least 12 people, officials said.

The attack around dawn in the town of Sayed Abad in Wardak province, about 70 kilometers (40 miles) from Kabul, served as a reminder that even after a decade of fighting, tens of thousands of U.S. and foreign troops are still engaged in a war that shows no signs of slowing down despite the start of a withdrawal of coalition forces.

The U.S.-led NATO coalition said that no American or coalition troops were killed in the blasts. It confirmed that a number of troops were wounded, but did not say how many, in accordance with coalition policy.

Shahidullah Shadid, a spokesman for the Wardak provincial governor, said one suicide bomber detonated a vest rigged with explosives outside a compound housing the district governor's office as well as local police and Afghan army headquarters. A second bomber driving a fuel tanker detonated his bomb on a road separating the compound from the base.

Shadid said the dead included eight civilians and four Afghan police.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack, which he said was targeting the U.S. base.

Government officials said the first attacker blew himself up to try to eliminate the Afghan security force guarding the compound and clear the way for the truck to hit the base down the road from the governor's complex. The second bomber then blew up the fuel tanker as he was approaching the base. One of the town's main bazaars is also located near the bomb site.

"A small explosion happened followed by a big one caused by a truck," said eyewitness Hamidullah, who like many Afghans goes by one name. "In these explosions a lot of people were wounded and also a large number of shops were destroyed. I fell down on the ground and everything around me was destroyed."

Officials said the second blast was far larger than the first.

"It was a very powerful explosion. It broke windows all over the area," said provincial police chief Gen. Abdul Qayum Bakizai. "Most of the injuries are from broken glass from the windows of homes and shops. It was so powerful we couldn't find much of the truck."

The governor's office said in a statement that 59 people were wounded ? 2 NATO troops, 47 civilians and ten Afghan police officers.

Last year, the same base in Wardak was the target of another suicide bombing. That blast, which occurred on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks against the United States, wounded 77 American soldiers and killed five Afghans. No U.S. troops were killed when the massive truck bomb exploded outside the base.

In a separate incident Saturday, NATO said that two U.S. soldiers were killed in eastern Ghazni province. It did not provide any further information or details about the deaths, the first this month. A total of 53 foreign troops were killed in Afghanistan in August.

The United States and other countries have already begun drawing down their forces in Afghanistan as part of a strategy that aims to hand over security responsibility to the Afghans by the end of 2014, when nearly all foreign troops are set to leave the country. President Barack Obama has pledged to remove 23,000 U.S. troops by the end of September, bringing the number of American forces down to 68,000.

There are currently 129,000 troops serving with the coalition, according to US Maj. Gen. Joseph Reynes Jr., director of operations at the Allied Joint Forces Command in Brunssum, the Netherlands. He said earlier this week that the number will drop to 108,000 by the end of October and dip under 100,000 by the end of the year.

The troops are to be replaced by Afghan army and police units, but many have questioned the effectiveness of an Afghan force that has high desertion rates and is often poorly disciplined. The Afghan security forces are supposed to reach a high of about 350,000 at the end of the year.

Crunch time is not a project management strategy

Time is ticking...

Time is ticking?

No matter how well planned a software project is why is it that the developers are the ones that always get squeezed?

It?s a fairly common story, a project gets the green light and business cases are generated. The financials are put together, rough estimates and functional specs are agreed upon. User experience (UX) and design are briefed and maybe someone even remembers to get Network Ops involved at the begining. The sales team starts working on a communication plan and launch events for key clients. Project kick off!

Work begins and a stakeholder wants to tweak something or market conditions change. The UX team wants more time to run user workshops or the systems architect gets sick for a few days, or key hardware is delayed due to a distant volcano grounding couriers. Slowly the shape of the project changes, even before the development team starts cutting code.

Suddenly the business case and project reality part ways.

Senior management still want their product ready, after all that is what the business case promises. Key clients were told launch dates and they have planned accordingly. In the end, the developers get what they need later than estimated but they aren?t allowed to appreciably change their delivery dates.

This ?crunch time? phase of the project is never pleasant for any involved but the programmers feel it especially acutely because they are so powerless to control the circumstances. Sadly, crunch time has become the norm and is even being glorified in the game development community.

There have been many techniques that have tried to address this project management conundrum from the traditional manufacturing oriented waterfall approach to ?lightweight? methods such as Extreme Programming (XP) and Agile Programming. While there have been some documented successes for lightweight approaches, and I do like them, they still fall short because at the end of the day, in real business, deadlines still loom.

Project management of software is a tough problem and it isn?t made easier by the fact that creating software is effectively the art of making the intangible, tangible. The difficulty is for any decent size software project to look and feel right and do the things it is meant to do and still be within the imaginations of the entire project team.

Lightweight development methodologies such as Agile advocate making as much of the software demonstrable (tangible) as early as possible. This helps draw out misunderstandings and difficulties before too much effort has been expended. The sooner those parts of the system solidify the sooner they are accepted by everyone and the more friction there is to making last minute changes.

The old saying of ?measure twice and cut once? actually works against software development because it creates this false expectation that if we spend more time planning we will spend less time changing our minds. Sometimes the way it works on paper feels wrong once put into software or what appears as mild scope creep actually results in fundamental changes under the hood. ?I feel that the modern digital equivalent should be ?prototype twice, go live once?.

Why does crunch time happen regardless of how hard we try to avoid it?

Fundamentally, software creation is experiential and iterative ? we need to experience the software to know if it is what we really want. We tend to undervalue getting the foundations of the design right and over value edge case optimizations. We expend a lot of energy trying to deal with the esoteric and interesting ?may be needed?. I am as guilty as the next person because I enjoy coding solutions to interesting problems. Scope creep is most evident when a good design enables all these value added software features and we take our eyes off implementing the design as planned to focus on those extras which make our product more unique in the market. Without discipline the ?nice to have? gets upgraded to ?must have? but the deadline approaches unchanged.

Sometimes these must have features are forced upon the developers due to market conditions, competing products or an overzealous sales person promising it to a client without consultation. This is totally demoralising as needs to be transparent so that the development team can understand where the changes are coming from and that it is not some whim that devalues their efforts to date.

This isn?t about adding in more contingency time to projects. Work expands to fill the available time and too much breathing room creates a lax environment and results in ?we?ll work it out later, we?ve got time? or equally as bad ?I?ve got plenty of time to work on this awesome unrequested feature?.

Developers need to have a voice throughout the entire process. Too many times I?ve seen programmers give rough estimates on pre-wireframed concepts and then be held to the estimates even when the designs are delivered late and no longer resemble the concepts the quote was for. This is a dreadful practice that only creates antagonism in the delivery phase. Changed feature requests should mean new estimates.

Writing software is not an assembly line process, no amount of project management can get around the fact that some days the code just doesn?t flow. Good software-oriented project management should be about protecting the team from spurious changes, politics and sudden priority shifts and creating a space where the developers can write good code with minimum rewrites, on time and under budget.

Why do you think that the development phase gets squashed and why do we never seem to be able to account for it?
