Border Patrol Agent Shoots Unarmed Texas Teen

EAGLE PASS (October 8, 2010)--A U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agent shot and killed an evidently unarmed teenage drug suspect after a brief tussle during a traffic stop in Texas, authorities said Friday.

Maverick County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Ruben Cano said Friday that the agent shot Juan Mendez, 18, of Eagle Pass on Tuesday.

Authorities have not released the agent's name.

Cano says witnesses said the agent pulled over a pickup truck Mendez was driving shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday.

A 15-year-old passenger ran and the agent and Mendez struggled briefly as he also tried to escape, the witnesses said.

They said Mendez broke free and the agent shot him twice.

Mendez, who evidently was unarmed, died at a hospital.

Agents found 325 pounds of marijuana in the truck, Cano said.
