Scott Dickens of Ancaster, Ont., lowered the meet record in the men's 100-metre breaststroke on Friday to open the Mel Zajac Jr. International Canada Cup swimming competition in Vancouver, B.C..
Dickens, nominated to the Olympic team in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, clocked 1:01.57 to eclipse his previous meet mark of 1:01.88 set in 2009.
Barry Murphy of the United States was second in 1:01.81 and Richard Funk of Edmonton third in 1:02.38.
"I'm really happy with that time," said Dickens, one of 10 Canadian Olympians at the competition. "I'm currently in a period of hard training and I'm feeling pretty tired. But it's under those kind of conditions that I need to get up and perform so that's really great for me."
Other Canadian winners were Eric Hedlin of Victoria in the 800 freestyle, Stef Milosevic of New Westminster, B.C., in the 400 IM, and Kelly Aspinall of Vancouver in the 50 butterfly.
A highlight race was the women's 100 breaststroke which was won by Leisel Jones, a three-time Olympic champion and one of 10 Australian Olympians at the meet.
Jones clocked 1:07.84, Martha McCabe of Toronto was second in 1:08.94 and Tera van Beilen of Oakville, Ont., third in 1:09.12.
McCabe is nominated to the Olympic team in the 200 breaststroke and van Beilen in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.
"It was really exciting for Tera and I to race Leisel Jones tonight," said McCabe, a world championship medallist last year. "My time was pretty good and I was focusing primarily on having a strong last 50 metres. I think I got a good feel for the stroke and I have a good idea of what I can do in the 200 tomorrow [Saturday]."
